On this day in 2019, as Typhoon #UrsulaPHโs clouds lingered over the Philippines, a spectacular "ring of fire" solar eclipse captivated southern Mindanao, with a partial view seen across the rest of the country. The event drew thousands of viewers, despite being just a day after Christmas.
An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between Earth and the Sun but appears smaller, leaving a glowing "ring of fire" around its edges. Though striking, annular eclipses are relatively common, occurring about every one or two yearsโmore frequently than total solar eclipses.
The 26 December 2019 annular eclipse was visible along a narrow path from the Middle East to South Asia, ending in Southeast Asia and Guam. In the Philippines, Glan (Batulak), Balut, and Sarangani Island were among the few areas to witness the full annular eclipse in the afternoon. The rest of the country experienced a partial eclipse.
According to PAGASA, the last annular eclipse visible in the Philippines occurred on 20 July 1944. The next is predicted for 28 February 2063, with most parts of Mindanao in the path of visibility.
