For the past few years, I’ve had the privilege of being part of @FIDA_Uganda’s #WeCannotWait campaign, a journey that strengthened my voice and deepened my advocacy for women’s rights.
It made me braver, more confident and unafraid to stand up for what I believe in.

We joined partners to close the We Cannot Wait Project a 5-year movement empowering women to lead and inspire change.
Its legacy lives on through the Kampala Women’s Rights Coalition, where we proudly belong.

The "We Cannot Wait" (WCW) project is dedicated to empowering grassroots women as formidable rights activists. 🌍
At FIDA Uganda's Lira field office, we're currently engaged in a reflective planning session under the WCW project, gathering Women's Rights Activists and Community Legal Volunteers. 🤝
This session isn't just about reviewing past achievements and challenges; it's about harnessing the collective wisdom and passion of these local champions. Together, we're crafting an action plan that will drive impactful change throughout the project's duration. 💼
Throughout the year, these activists have cultivated strong networks, celebrated each other's contributions, and ignited innovative ideas to propel the women's rights movement forward. 🚀 It's a celebration of collaboration and grassroots activism at its finest.
Join us as we continue to champion women's voices and advocate for a future where every woman's rights are upheld and respected. 💪

Contracts are unavoidable, but navigating them doesn't have to be daunting! 📝
Our Lira team dived into the essentials of agreements🤝 and contracts🤝📖📖 during the “women’s hour program”. Did you know that according to Ugandan law, transactions exceeding 500,000💰💰 shillings must be in writing? 📜
Our panel discussed this and more on 'women's hour'; emphasizing the importance of understanding the difference between agreements and contracts. At FIDA-Uganda, we're committed to empowering women with the knowledge they need to protect their rights and livelihoods, so they can stay informed and stay empowered! 💪📻

In a successful mediation,🤝🤝 our Lira field office reclaimed a vital piece of land in Awangomoko village, Lira City East division. Our client, a widow, faced a distressing situation as her own family attempted to seize the land gifted to her by her late grandmother.👵🏿
This story echoes a wider crisis. Statistics reveal that a staggering 90% of widows in Uganda endure property grabbing, leaving them without means to support themselves and their families.
All around the country, FIDA-Uganda is combating such injustices. Through education and mediation, we ensure that widows and vulnerable individuals understand and assert their rights. In this case, our intervention led to a successful resolution: the respondents agreed to return the land, boundaries were established, and an agreement was signed to prevent future disputes.

Beyond the immediate physical and emotional toll, sexual violence also inflicts significant economic disadvantages on women. It deters their participation in markets, stifles entrepreneurship, and perpetuates cycles of poverty.
Like Dan Kabanda Bbosa of Kalerwe market, most market leaders are men, making it crucial to engage them in efforts to combat violence in the marketplace. By empowering these leaders, we're not just creating safer markets; we're also breaking down barriers to economic and social empowerment. Let's unite to end sexual violence and foster environments where everyone can thrive.

Data from the Uganda Bureau of Statistics shows that in Uganda, women’s contribution to the economy can not be ignored, accounting for approximately 70% of the agricultural labor force. Pivotally, they also engage in entrepreneurship, boosting the economy.
When sexual violence happens in the marketplace, it threatens the economic component of their empowerment.
For women vendors in Kalerwe Market, sexual violence in the workplace has a twofold effect. First is the violation of their autonomy which is closely followed by a disproportionate negative effect on their livelihood. This can be through trauma and emotional distress resulting from assault that leads to absenteeism, reduced productivity, and even job loss.
Under the We Cannot Wait Project, we have empowered women activists in Nakawa market in Uganda to lead and define the political, socio-cultural, and economic agenda through a gender lens at all levels through advocacy for policy change, law reform, and social norms change.
In this video, Molly Wandiru, a vendor and activist at the market encourages vendors and customers in the marketplace to be respectful of one another- keeping in mind each others’s bodily autonomy and right to equality.
She also stresses the need to have psycological treatment centers for victims of abuse in the markets to access resources that they much need.
