With 43+ million students in higher education, India needs autonomous colleges capable of experimenting, innovating and responding to industry. Yet only about 1 in 5 colleges had NAAC accreditation in the latest widely cited data.
The answer is not more bureaucracy. It is radical reform of UGC, NAAC and AICTE, with transparent outcome-based accreditation and genuine institutional autonomy.
Education anxiety starts early. Rote learning, examinations and compliance consume years that should build creativity, entrepreneurship and employability.
The next threat is an edtech-politician-management-college nexus monetising this anxiety. If regulators themselves do not undergo a stringent renaissance, education risks becoming a certificate industry where profit beats learning.
India does not lack talent. It lacks an institutional system willing to trust, measure and reward talent.
The New Deal must fix the regulators first, then liberate the colleges.
