Light for the African continent

Africa stands at a crossroads. The AI revolution is being powered by GPUs, hyperscale data centers, and vast amounts of data. Those who control compute and data will shape the global economy, security landscape, and flow of knowledge for decades to come.

Yet across the continent, political tensions, illegal immigration disputes, xenophobia, and growing social divisions risk distracting us from a far greater strategic challenge: securing Africa’s place in the AI age.

Data sovereignty is not nationalism—it is survival. African data should help build African industries, African innovation, and African prosperity. Without sovereign digital infrastructure, our data will continue to fuel value creation elsewhere.

The window is closing. If Africa does not invest in GPUs, data centers, talent, energy, and cross-border cooperation now, we will become dependent on foreign platforms and foreign intelligence systems.

The choice is simple: build the infrastructure that powers AI, or live under the infrastructure built by others.

The story isn’t just about Anthropic’s Fable 5.

It’s about what happens when AI stops being viewed purely as a technology product and starts being treated as strategic infrastructure.

For years, the conversation was about who could build the best model.

Today, the conversation is increasingly about who controls the most capable systems, the data that trains them, and the economic value they create.

The US is racing.
China is racing.

The question for Africa is different:

Are we building enough to shape the future, or are we preparing to consume what others create in perpetuity?

Having the youngest most dynamic population on Earth begs for a deeper engagement.

This moment demands more than commentary. It demands capability.

We should be builders, owners, researchers, and exporters of intelligence. After all, we have at our disposal, a treasure trove of unique data sets that are the envy of the frontier models, yet to be exploited.

And then there’s the deeper question.

As these systems become more autonomous, adaptive, and seemingly creative, are we witnessing the early stages of machine consciousness—or simply discovering that consciousness itself is far less understood than we once believed?

Perhaps the most important breakthrough won’t be in artificial intelligence.

It may be in our understanding of human intelligence.

Either way, history is accelerating.

The only real risk is watching it happen from the sidelines.

@AnthropicAI Fable 5 is the closest to AGI as we have seen. Now that we’ve gotten a taste of it, time to go back to the drawing board and keep fine-tuning and training other agentic models with potentials to be great. Let the race begin!

This is a super exciting release - Claude Fable 5 is the same underlying model as Mythos but with added safeguards. The benchmarks are great and it's SOTA on everything by a margin but I'll add that *qualitatively* also, this is a major-version-bump-deserving step change forward (imo of the same order as Claude 4.5 was in November), peaking especially for long problem-solving sessions on very difficult problems. You can give it a lot more ambitious tasks than what you're used to, the model "gets it" and it will just go, and it's never felt this tempting to stop looking at the code at all (but don't do this in prod!). The model still has quirks that people will run into and the safeguards are configured to be a little too trigger happy for launch, which can hopefully be tuned over time.

I feel a lot of things changing as working software increasingly comes out on a tap. The Jevon's paradox kicks in and I feel my own demand for software growing substantially. You can ask for anything - explainers, visualizers, dashboards, bespoke single-use apps (e.g. a full wandb that is hyper-specific just for your project), you can 10X your test suite, auto-optimize code, run giant research projects with custom HTML for the results, anything! "Free your mind" (Matrix ref). Really looking forward to all the things people build!
