EXCLUSIVE: Washington and Lee University didn't change its name. Now no one is happy and dollars are at stake @wlunews@haswlurenamed@bizjournals@WBJonline https://t.co/SsrAzJTK7r
WEB DuBois, as usual, nails it. “Robert Lee was a traitor and a rebel–not indeed to his country, but to humanity and humanity’s God.”
That’s why the statues must go.

(3) What I love most about @nhannahjones’s decision is that she didn’t just free herself from being entrapped in a toxic, outdated institution, she decided to draw from what she knows about our history and CREATE something new that will move us all forward via great journalism.
(2) Institutions are adept at making us feel like we couldn’t professionally survive without them. We start to believe it and doubt our potential to thrive independently. When in doubt about our potential, let’s remember the GIANT neon exit sign @nhannahjones made for us.
Gratitude to @nhannahjones b/c her decision has sparked conversations about (1) what it feels like to get lost inside institutions that begrudge us EVEN AS they use us and our work to launder their reputations. Many institutions would rather spite themselves than even do that.
For some Americans, history isn’t the story of what actually happened; it’s the story they want to believe. @ClintSmithIII on why Confederate lies live on: https://t.co/O0qkzbCMXF
Unfortunately, my alma mater, Washington and Lee University, has again missed an opportunity. And by clearly and overwhelmingly missing that opportunity, it has made matters worse.
