How the Fourth Pillar of Democracy Was Broken in India

In a Liberal Democracy, the Press is supposed to be the Fourth Pillar of #Democracy, provided it enjoys true independence—something it has lost to a great extent in #Modi's India.

◾First, the Government used Ads as a tool.
In June 2019, just after the #LokSabha Elections, it decided to cut off or reduce advertisements it had previously placed in three major newspaper groups: the Times of India, The Hindu, and Amrita Bazar Patrika, which also published The Telegraph.
For the first and the last of these, this move represented a drop of 15 percent in these Newspapers' ads.

◾Second, Media outlets have been intimidated by "Raids."
The #CBI raid at the residence of Prannoy Roy, cofounder and executive chairperson of #NDTV, is a case in point.
While the raid was "justified" by an "alleged loss to a bank" in relation to an ICICI loan-a loan that had already been reimbursed, said Roy-this police action was widely attributed to critical reporting by #NDTV.
Indeed, the raid took place one day after an on-air altercation between an #NDTV anchor and #SambitPatra.

◾Third, TV channels have been banned temporarily.
In 2020, two Malayalam channels were banned for 48 Hrs by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting because of their coverage of the #DelhiRiots.
They were accused, among other things, of being "critical towards #DelhiPolice and #RSS."

◾Fourth, the Government puts pressure on the owners of media outlets to get rid of committed Journalists.
While many Journalists who were critical of the #ModiGovernment have resigned, there is evidence of such pressure in only a few cases.
#PunyaPrasunBajpai is one of them.
While his show, Masterstroke, was increasingly popular and critical of #Modi, He was asked by the proprietor on ABP News to "refrain from mentioning the name of Prime Minister Modi" and then not to show his image on his program.

◾Fifth, Dissenting voices in the Media have been harassed more and more systematically.
#AakarPatel, a Journalist and Human Rights Activist, was booked by the Police because he had retweeted a video showing people gathering near Colorado's capitol building to protest the killing of George Floyd, with this comment:
"We need protests like these from Dalits, Muslims, Adivasis, poor and women. World will notice. Protest is a craft." The police filed an FIR under three sections of the IPC.
