A transport engineering scholar from Thammasat University has urged Thailand to rethink railway crossing safety as a systemic issue, following the deadly Makkasan train-bus crash.
Panudet Chumyen said safety at rail crossings should not rely mainly on split-second human decisions, warning that trains cannot brake or swerve like road vehicles. He called for integrated real-time traffic and rail data systems, smarter traffic-light management, obstacle-detection technology, and better coordination between road and rail agencies to reduce risks before accidents happen.
He also cautioned that reducing train services into inner Bangkok may ease conflicts at crossings in the short term, but could unfairly burden passengers and weaken the rail network in the long run. #Thailand
