Garbage Collector in .NET - simplified 💡
1. Marking Phase
In the marking phase, the Garbage Collector marks all objects that can be deleted later. For example, you have a small local list inside your function, and that function returns. Your list is now out of scope and can now be deleted.
2. Sweeping Phase
Now that we have some objects we can delete, the Garbage Collector runs around and deletes those memory blocks. That can leave some holes inside your memory. Therefore, we have the next Phase:
3. Compacting Phase
The compacting phase is like the defragmentation tool on old HDD drives, where you move the files to the beginning and the "empty" space to the end of the drive. The Garbage collector does things similar to your memory.
