It was then that I pointed out that I was actually not 18 yet, and despite the lax nature of the local bookies, I shouldn’t really risk it, as the headlines, should I be pulled up, wouldn’t be very advantageous for this cabinet minister’s political career
Reminded today of the time, at the back end of Gordon Brown’s labour government, that I was volunteering in the constituency office of a then cabinet minister. This cabinet minister’s then office manager (now a Labour MP) asked me to go into town and place a bet for him…
the reason being that it was the grand national that Saturday, and this particular cabinet minister every year would place a bet on the grand national (his only bet of the year), and for some reason this was delegated to his constituency office…
@ellegist First daughter was a hospital birth, had a good experience. Born in water, home after a day. Second daughter was a home delivery, also had a good experience! As chilled as could be, midwives went home after a couple of hours, had Pizza Hut takeaway for tea
@thecricketmen Always remember a piece in Wisden Cricketer or The Spin picking a future Ashes XI and Bob Willis put Karl Brown in as opener as “he plays international quality shots”. He missed with that one.
@bouledenerfs_ A left-wing politician: “English identity is the tolpuddle martyrs and 17th century radicalism”
Me, with a medieval studies MA: “True English identity is translating Boethius’ ‘Consolations of Philosophy’ and Gregory the Great’s ‘Pastoral Care’ into the Old English vernacular”
Think @LeadingEdgePod need to do this, but for 00s and 2010s County Cricketers. What would they been called? How are they defined? Who is more iconic out of Will and Alex Gidman? The public needs to know.
