OnDeck cross-referenced Google search volume data with the actual number of businesses in each local category across the U.S. The goal: find where demand consistently outpaces supply. Where people are actively searching for something and not finding enough of it nearby.

The most under-served local business in America, by that measure, is car rentals. Americans run 823,000 searches for "car rental" every month. There are 24,414 car rental companies nationwide. That ratio puts it at the top of the list by a significant margin.

The rest of the top five: tailors, dog cafés, kebab shops and pubs. Not tech platforms. Not AI tools. Businesses that require a physical location, a real skill set and showing up consistently for a local customer base.

The broader data point worth sitting with: 62% of Americans say they'd prefer to be their own boss, according to a Shopify-Gallup study. The average entrepreneur earns roughly $77,000 a year — slightly above the median employee salary of $70,000. The financial upside at the start isn't dramatic. The autonomy is.

Most people who want to start a business spend years waiting for the right idea. The data suggests a simpler approach: find out what your market is already searching for, check whether enough businesses exist to serve that demand and open the thing that's missing. The opportunity is usually less about invention and more about showing up where the gap already is.

Dear @WhiteHouse, my name is Rodney Smith Jr., founder of Raising Men & Women Lawn Care Service in Huntsville, Alabama. Through our 50 Yard Challenge, over 6,000 kids across the country have signed up to mow free lawns for the elderly, disabled, veterans, active-duty military, first responders, and single parents. With America celebrating its 250th birthday this year and me also being born on July 4th, I wanted to humbly ask if a few kids from our program and myself could travel to Washington, D.C. to help mow the White House lawn for this historic celebration.

More than anything, I want these kids to see how a simple act of service something as ordinary as mowing a lawn for someone in need can lead to extraordinary places. What better lesson in community service than showing them that helping others can take them all the way to our nation’s capital? I’d also love to bring my American flag-themed mower in hopes that the President might sign it, so I can later auction it off and donate 100% of the proceeds to a nonprofit supporting veterans. It would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to highlight the importance of service, patriotism, and the impact young people can have when they choose to make a difference. 🇺🇸

AI infrastructure stocks are booming:

AI infrastructure stocks have outperformed the equal-weight S&P 500 by +115% since December 2023, more than any other AI-related category.

This group covers semiconductors, data center operators, cloud providers, networking equipment firms, and power companies, among others.

This is followed by a +45% outperformance from mega-cap hyperscalers, including Microsoft $MSFT, Alphabet $GOOGL, Amazon $AMZN, and Meta $META.

AI productivity stocks, which track companies using AI to cut costs and boost efficiency rather than build the technology, have outperformed by +10% over the same period.

Meanwhile, software names have been the weakest group, trailing the average stock by -20%.
