Fascinating how one of the primary vectors of attack against Gabriel Rockhill’s project is to yank it from the realm of historical and dialectical materialism and critique what it resolutely is not: an account of an elaborate and murky conspiracy led by the CIA.

Instead, Rockhill’s work shows how the political economy of imperialism produces and reproduces certain currents of thought quite independently of any overt state control — even if that control played a significant role in constructing the cultural, economic, and political scaffolding that nurtures and rewards some ideas while sidelining others.

At the end of the day, by ignoring the substance of Rockhill’s critique, these straw man positions end up being only marginally more sophisticated than attempts to dismiss an argument by labelling their author a ‘tankie’ or ‘conspiracy theorist’.
