OTs help you to help yourself. It's not their job to 'train' you. They teach you how you can own your own body, how to listen to it, how to learn from it, how to work it so that it can work.

I'm not sure why #OccupationalTherapy is trending today but it reminds me that it was wonderful occupational therapists working with physiotherapists and nurses at St Pancras Rehabilitation Hospital who taught me to stand up and walk, all done with care, kindness and great skill

I'm all for jobs with more responsibility being banded higher. I'm all for a premium being paid where vacancies are high. I baulk at the idea that one degree entry profession is intrinsically better than others so deserves better pay.

When I went to St Pancras Rehab Hospital, I couldn't stand up and I couldn't walk at all. The physiotherapists and occupational therapists told me that they would get me walking in 3 weeks. I didn't believe them. They were right. I was wrong. The taught me how to walk again.

Imagine you sold carrots, turnips and parsnips; you wouldn’t call your store “the carrot shop”. Folk wouldn’t know they can get turnips there. So calling it “the root vegetable shop”would cover all options. Then imagine the media reacted by screaming “YOU CAN’T EVEN SAY CARROTS”
