For a long time, many software programs used a type of database known as relational databases. These were reliable and well-known, but they weren't very flexible. Sometimes, if developers needed to do something special, it meant extra work, which took more time.

Then, something new came along: NoSQL databases. These are more adaptable and can change to fit what the software needs better. Now, there are lots of different NoSQL databases to choose from. We pick one based on what the software has to do, not just because it's a certain type of database.
