Education research is weak and sloppy. Why? We all quickly condemned Units of Study, and Fountas and Pinnell, but what is happening in math is even worse. https://t.co/fGASKjOudI
The Kansas Math Project is offering a FREE 2-day training to all PreK-12 educators this month. Build understanding of evidence-based teaching strategies & math content knowledge. We hope to see you there!

The NCTM is one of the most influential sources of misinformation about how math learning works. Problems with their statement:
1. Fluency=accuracy+speed. Timed tests are a direct way to assess fluency.
2. There is no evidence that timed tests cause math anxiety.
❌Despite this, NCTM recommends that timed tests be avoided. This guidance is irresponsible and not aligned with the evidence on learning.
One good thing about this USA Today article: it draws attention to Ben Solomon's petition to retract the New York Math briefs.

The Kansas MTSS & Alignment BSEL team is pleased to share good news! Our work with Dr. Lori DeSautels, Pre-symposium speaker and Neuroscience Resiliency expert (Revelations in Education), is being extended into 2026. Please join us for this series of three FREE webinars.
Not all "research" is evidence that you as a teacher should use a strategy in your classroom. You don't have the right to experiment w children or use instructional tactics you like. You have a moral & professional obligation to ensure children attain the academic skills they need to thrive in their lives. The math education community must begin to take this obligation seriously. Currently most children in the U.S. are not proficient in mathematics. This was not caused by COVID. Math proficiency has been mostly unimproved since 2002. I lose sleep over this. Our children deserve better. And here's the thing-- it's not hard to fix. We know exactly how to fix this problem. Our systems lack the will to truly support teachers to deliver effective instruction in math.
Kansas Math Project Facilitator Training-Register for an upcoming fall session on Oct. 24th or Nov. 17th.
Prior to the training, you need to have attended an in-person KMP Foundation training and received your certificate of completion.

This is why understanding how learning works is so important. People predicted this result without needing the study. Mayer and Fiorella’s Generative Learning Theory may have become the single most important thing for teachers to know in the age of AI.
Recently I’ve had the misfortune of being reminded how widespread BTC has become. Before years pass by, and mathematics education has its very own Lucy Calkins, continue to talk about it with colleagues. @greg_ashman in one of his recent posts says it nicely;
“Building Thinking Classrooms has precisely zero robust evidence of effectiveness and is based on the fundamentally misconceived idea that unless students are engaged in discovery learning, they are not ‘thinking’. It is therefore likely to be a less effective approach than explicit teaching and disastrous for the most disadvantaged students.”
