His reasoning was specific. Leo XIII wrote Rerum Novarum in 1891, the encyclical that answered the first industrial revolution after machines started swallowing human labor. The new Leo said the Church now faces "another industrial revolution" in artificial intelligence, and took the name to signal he would answer it the same way.

That 1891 letter shaped minimum wage campaigns in the US, the basic wage ruling in Australia, and Catholic labor unions across Europe and Mexico. One document set the Church's economic agenda for a century.

And here's the detail almost nobody knows. Leo XIV holds a mathematics degree from Villanova, class of 1977. When he describes AI art as "statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others," that is a math major giving an accurate one-line description of how image models actually work.

Leo XIII needed 13 years of his papacy to publish Rerum Novarum. Leo XIV named his target in 48 hours.

The labs plan in quarters. The Church plans in centuries, and it just signaled to 1.4 billion people where it stands on AI art.
