My family had just reached Albania after being forced from our home in Kosovo by Serbian forces.

An Open Letter to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy

For the first time in days, I was resting, not only from the exhaustion of walking, but because I finally felt a little safer. I could no longer see Serbian soldiers pointing weapons at us.

A few days earlier, while we were fleeing alongside many other families, Serbian forces forced us into the courtyard of a church, as they were preparing to execute us.

One Serbian soldier held a knife to my face.

I was six years old.

During those days, I watched my father carry his elderly mother on his back. I walked past the bodies of murdered Albanians while surrounded by Serbian soldiers, weapons and tanks.

Thousands of civilians were killed during the war in Kosovo. Children, women and elderly people were among the victims. Thousands suffered sexual violence. To this day, Serbia has never fully confronted these crimes, while senior officials continue to deny or minimise them.

But Kosovo survived.

Kosovo became independent.

Ukraine still does not recognize our country.

And yet, when Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Kosovo did not ask whether Ukraine recognised us before deciding which side we were on.

Kosovo stood with Ukraine.

We imposed sanctions on Russia. Ukrainian flags filled our cities. Kosovo provided humanitarian and financial assistance, welcomed Ukrainian journalists, and helped train Ukrainian personnel in demining.

A small and young country did what it could to support a country that still does not recognise its existence.

Do you know why?

Because we know what it means to be the victim of aggression.

We know what it means to have someone try to erase your country, your identity and your right to exist.

Kosovars understood Ukrainians instinctively.

We tried to understand even when Kosovo was left outside meetings and initiatives involving other countries in our region.

But hearing you speak about Kosovo as if it were part of Serbia, while standing alongside Aleksandar Vučić, who once served as Slobodan Milošević’s Minister of Information, is deeply painful and profoundly disappointing.

Serbia has maintained close ties with Russia for years.

And the International Court of Justice concluded that Kosovo’s declaration of independence did not violate international law.

I do not expect Ukraine to “reward” Kosovo because we supported you.

That is not the point.

I expected something much simpler: that a country fighting for its own freedom, sovereignty and right to exist would understand another people who fought for exactly the same things.

President Zelenskyy, Kosovo is an independent state whether Ukraine recognises it today or not.

And despite this disappointment, I still hope Ukraine remains an independent state too.

I hope Ukraine survives aggression and brutality, just as Kosovo did.

Because freedom should not depend on who is asking for it.

On this day in 2014, near 🇺🇦 Luhansk, a married couple - Olena Kulish and Volodymyr Alyokhin - were executed mafia-style. Olena was a radio host & animal rights activist. Volodymyr was a programmer.

They were “accused” of supplying Ukrainian soldiers with food.

Russians (or Russia-paid “separatists”) broke in, killed them, looted everything of value, and turned the house into their “headquarters.”

They also killed Olena’s six dogs, just for the fun of it.

Olena and Volodymyr. Remember them!

The premise that Ukraine stopping strikes would de-escalate the war is simply wrong. Russia has steadily increased the scale and intensity of its attacks since 2022, regardless of Ukraine’s response. If Ukraine stops tomorrow, Russia won’t. It’s that simple.
