Private Nigerian Universities Will Always Be Better Than Federal Universities. Here’s Why:

I did my earlier degrees in a federal university and decided to do my postgraduate programme in a private university. Guys, the culture shock is real! 😭

As a new student, I went for my registration fully prepared for battle. But guess what? I finished my entire physical registration in one day. In less than two hours!

No unnecessary queues. No standing under the sun. No “come back tomorrow.”

And the politeness of the non-academic staff? 10/10. Everyone was respectful, attended to me promptly, and nobody acted like I came to beg for a favour instead of paying school fees.

I went to ICT for my ID card, but there was a little technical issue. The lady apologized, took my number and promised to contact me once it was ready. No chasing anybody. And she reached out!

I later went to get my official email. The person handling it had stepped out, so the staff gave me her contact instead of asking me to wait indefinitely. I reached out, and 15 minutes later, she replied, apologized and asked me to come over. She even joked with me while attending to me.

At this point, I was looking around like, “Am I still in Nigeria?” Because my federal university experience was a completely different fiasco. 😭💔

Registration could take weeks. You’d queue for hours under the Nigerian sun, sweat, wait endlessly, move forward by two steps, and finally hear the usual:

“Come back tomorrow.” “I’m eating.” “The person that will sign it is not around.” “Check back later.” “He has seen it, but come back later.” And finally, “The person that will sign it just stepped out.”

And when the person finally showed up, they’d sign your document in 10 seconds. Meanwhile, you’d spent 10 working days chasing that same signature. I could have blinked and missed the entire process. 😭

Sometimes, I genuinely wonder: is the difference the school type?

Because honestly, students are not asking for miracles. Just attend to us like human beings. All this makes me wonder if the request is actually difficult or they just don’t want to do the job.

I love how graduates are intentionally flaunting their grades and academic achievements online, it’s an evidence of hard or smart work, discipline, rigor, survival and resilience.

Even if it is not a first class, the fact that you were able to finish is no small feat at all!
