India stretches nearly 3,000 km from east to west, but we all follow the same clock.
In the Northeast, the sun rises and sets earlier that West of India. But the clock stays the same, so daily routines often happen later than the daylight does.
That mismatch has sparked a long-running debate: should India have two time zones — or simply change the clock?
And surprisingly, India has wrestled with this before.
Before IST became the national standard, cities followed their own local times based on the sun. Bombay, Calcutta and Madras each had different clocks.
The British later pushed for a single standard time because one clock made railways, trade, shipping and administration easier to coordinate across the country.
But unifying India’s clocks wasn’t simple.
Bombay resisted. Calcutta held on to its own time. Even after IST became the national standard, both cities took years to give up their clocks.
Today, the debate has come full circle.
Researchers have argued that instead of creating two time zones, India could advance IST by 30 minutes to better align daily schedules with daylight.
Why? Much of the country’s electricity demand peaks in the evening, when people return home and switch on lights and appliances. Researchers estimated that shifting the clock could reduce this peak and save 2.7 billion units of electricity a year — worth around ₹1,400 crore based on their estimates.
The bigger question remains: should India have one clock for a country this wide — or should our clocks better follow the sun?

@IndianTechGuide Dont bring in gurgaon, bring in that part of India which have good weather throughout the year. Disneyland is mostly an outside activity with kids and in north India, it’s hot most of the year and few months are better to be out in whole day activity with kids.
Experience vs Expertise. It can take 10 years of experience to get 1 year of expertise or on the other hand it can take only 1 year to get expertise worth 10 years of experience.
Choose wisely.
market, but I would love to re-challenge myself to again work on a product which Apple slowly brings after 9 years giving me more confidence that yes our innovation started 9 years before Apple. 😁 (7/7)
9 years ago when I was based in London, I developed small tracking tag which you can paste anywhere (similar to @Apple Airtag) and could connect to mobile app and help solve many use case including finding your keys, determining where is your kid, find any lost item, etc.(1/7)
Products can be built creatively by anyone, and you don’t have to be just a big company to bring innovation. Mostly Startup’s do have same capabilities or better creativity many times as compared to big companies. Not only I look forward to see how Apple AirTag will do in (6/7)
