Back when I wrote technical articles for the Confluent blog, I had this constant argument with the editorial team:
They hated that I used the same words to describe the same thing. Especially when it meant saying "low latency" 20 times in a 500 word post. They suggested I mix things up with "performant", "fast", "real time", etc.
My opinion is that using different words will be imprecise at best and confusing at worst. Using the same words to describe a concept whenever it comes up, helps readers know that I am still talking about the same thing and not introducing new ideas. For me, this was good writing.
Fast forward 6 years, and I'm using LLM that was clearly trained by the same editors who drove me nuts. And I think the harnesses also penalize models for repeating the same words in the output.
So every single time I need to ask: "You described this part of the design as 'retry path' and the other part as 'drive forward after failure' - do you mean retry in both cases? or is 'drive forward' somehow different from retry?
And no matter how often I say "please use the same terms when describing the same idea", it doesn't help - the LLM remains bound by its training and penalties, and I get to try and decypher what it means each time.

He proposed the idea of an Indian Academic Network as early as 1983, years before most Indians had ever touched a keyboard.
3 years later, the idea became a govt project: ERNET - the Education and Research Network...
A joint effort between India's Department of Electronics and the United Nations Development Programme, partly funded by the Indian govt.
This was not one lab, one city, one ambitious institute...
8 institutions came together as equal partners:
- the National Centre for Software Technology in Bombay
- the Department of Electronics in Delhi
- the Indian Institute of Science in Bangalore
- and 5 IITs (Madras, Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, and KGP)
Somewhere in a room in Bombay, at the National Centre for Software Technology, a young team (Ramani among them), alongside colleagues at IIT Bombay got "2" computers talking to each other using something called UUCP, "Unix to Unix Copy Protocol."
It was the earliest email exchange in India's networking history, happening between NCST and IIT Bombay in 1986-87.
No fanfare. No press conference....
Just a handful of engineers proving that a message could travel from one Indian machine to another without a human physically carrying it there.
A year later, Ramani's team did something no one in India had ever done before: they built ERNET's first international gateway, a link connecting India to Amsterdam using TCP over X.25: the very first such international connection from Indian soil.
For the first time in history, a message typed in India could leave the country digitally and land on a computer in Europe.
The team was not done. A year after Amsterdam, they connected ERNET to UUNET in Falls Church, Virginia....plugging India directly into the American networking world.
Meanwhile, back home, the other partner institutions were racing to lay their own domestic links so the network could actually spread...leased lines began connecting ERNET's partner campuses to the central gateway in Bombay that same year.
Imagine the scale of what was happening quietly, invisibly, in the background of a country most of the world still saw as agrarian and analog: India was wiring itself into the future, institute by institute, line by line.
By 1989, ERNET had an actual analog leased line running at 9600 bits per second connecting Bombay to UUNET in the US, impossibly slow by today's standards, but at the time, a lifeline to the world.
By 1990, TCP/IP, the actual language of the modern internet was running between ERNET's own centres domestically.
And then, in 1992, two things happened that sealed ERNET's place in history. Its overseas link was upgraded to a 64 kbps digital leased line, and by expanding dial up access to universities across the country, ERNET effectively became India's first internet service provider, years before any private company existed to claim that title.
Other institutions kept joining the fold, the astrophysics institute IUCAA in Pune, then TIFR in Bombay, and soon dial up links numbering in the 100s across the country, each one a new outpost of a network nobody outside India had asked them to build.
