Today, we're excited to release several major upgrades to the Heptabase AI Agent.

1. The AI Agent now has everything it needs to organize your knowledge base. It can now edit whiteboards, cards, tag databases, and more.

2. We've introduced new skills to help the AI Agent organize your knowledge base. Whether you're just getting started with Heptabase or already have an existing knowledge base, the AI Agent can help you build a well-structured knowledge base from scratch or improve and maintain the one you already have.

3. We've added an Instruction Card for the AI Agent. You can customize it to teach the AI how you want your knowledge base to be organized and managed.

With these new capabilities, your workflow becomes much simpler. Just talk with the AI Agent about the questions you care about or the materials you want to understand—whether they're web pages, YouTube videos, or PDFs.

The AI Agent won't just turn your conversations into notes. It will also automatically organize your notes and source materials into the right whiteboards and tags, so you can spend less time managing your knowledge base and more time reading, discussing, thinking, and building deep understanding.

Over the next few weeks, we'll continue expanding what the AI Agent can do:

- Add more skills to help organize whiteboards, visualize complex topics, manage goals, build LLM Wikis, and more.

- Let you create your own custom skills to automate repetitive workflows in Heptabase.

- Bring the AI Agent to mobile.

- Deepen the integration between the Heptabase AI Agent and tools like Claude Code and Codex.

In the latest version of Heptabase, no matter which plan you’re on, if you’re a ChatGPT subscriber, you can now use ChatGPT Codex directly in Heptabase!

Once you connect your ChatGPT account to Heptabase, any AI usage from GPT models will not consume the AI credits included in your current Heptabase plan.

In the latest version, you can use your OpenRouter API key with Heptabase's AI agent.

Once you enable OpenRouter, you'll be able to use open-source models including DeepSeek V4 Flash, DeepSeek V4 Pro, MiMo V2.5 Pro, Qwen 3.7 Plus, Kimi K3, Qwen 3.7 Max, and GLM 5.2.

Today, we’re excited to announce that the AI Tutor feature is officially out of public beta!

In the latest version, we’ve granted 1,000 AI Tutor credits to all Pro, Premium, and PremiumPlus subscribers. These credits will allow you to start a new course and complete a few lessons, giving you a taste of how AI Tutor can transform the way you learn in the AI era. Please note that these credits will **expire** on April 22, 2026, so you have about two weeks to try it out and let us know what you think!

Once you run out of your granted credits, if you want to use AI Tutor more but don’t necessarily need everything included in the Premium plan (unlimited basic AI chats and PDF parsing) or the PremiumPlus plan (a 33% discount on all AI credits), you can enable on-demand usage and set a monthly spending limit.

Finally, we want to share a bit more about the product direction we’re heading toward. From the very beginning, Heptabase has been a company dedicated to inventing the best way to learn and do research. In the AI era, where AI possesses more knowledge than any human in history, we see a clear path to upgrading Heptabase into a service that can help you achieve any learning and research goal:

- We, as humans, should spend most of our time reading, thinking, asking, practicing, and making the decisions that truly matter to us.

- AI agents, on the other hand, should spend most of their time teaching us, guiding our research, organizing our knowledge bases, executing our tasks, and solving our problems at scale.

To achieve this, we currently have two major tracks in our product roadmap:

- The first track is to continuously improve the reading, thinking, and practicing experience for human (e.g., an upgraded mobile PDF reader, web annotation, EPUB reader, handwriting support, better whiteboards, flashcards, etc.). We also want to ensure that all this knowledge and understanding can translate into the important decisions you make in your life and career.

- The second track focuses on building powerful AI agents with long-term memory. These agents will understand the best way to teach you, guide your direction in your learning and research, find and read high-quality sources, and take notes to organize in your knowledge base. They will even be able to run code, conduct experiments, and transform their findings into written content, explainer audios and videos, and interactive web cards.

We believe both tracks are equally important, and we are investing heavily in them. We’ll spend more time writing about this in the coming months, but in the meantime, we encourage you to try out AI Tutor and let me know what you think!

Today, we're excited to release the Heptabase CLI — a new way for external AI agents to interact with your local Heptabase knowledge base from the terminal.

Once enabled (Settings > AI Features > CLI), any AI coding agent (e.g., Claude Code, Codex) can:

- Create, read, and edit note cards and journals
- Search your Card Library
- Manage tags
- Read your AI Tutor courses, lessons, and chat history

This is just the first step; we'll keep expanding the CLI surface so AI agents can act on your knowledge at the same depth that you can.

I started @Heptabase 4 years ago, with the mission to give people the power to gain a deep understanding of anything. We began by building a visual knowledge base for students, researchers, and lifelong learners. It quickly became a beloved product used in over 150+ countries around the world, won the @ProductHunt annual Golden Kitty Award in the Personal Productivity category, and scaled profitably into millions in revenue.

However, I’m not satisfied. For sure, it’s a great app to organize and make sense of all your learning and research notes. But it’s still far from our mission. You can’t learn quantum mechanics or the theory of relativity just by downloading Heptabase. You still need to have a teacher or spend a lot of time reading difficult sources on your own before you can get the most value out of Heptabase.

Things have changed today. I’m very excited to introduce Heptabase’s AI Tutor — an AI agent that is designed to help you achieve any learning goal you’ve set. This is not another “upload and ask” AI app like ChatGPT, Gemini, or NotebookLM. It’s built to help you make step-by-step progress toward your goal:

1. Goal-Oriented Curriculum: Simply state your learning goal (e.g., study Western philosophy, understand international politics, pass the bar exam, or achieve financial freedom), and the AI Tutor will design a personalized syllabus tailored to your level and needs.

2. Systematic & Personalized Learning: Instead of trying to figure out what question to ask, the AI Tutor guides you. It provides step-by-step reading materials—allowing you to highlight important content and ask questions about anything you don't understand—then tests your understanding and dynamically adapts to your learning style and pace over time.

3. Seamless Note-taking Integration: Your highlights, notes, and Q&A sessions are automatically organized onto dedicated whiteboards and converted into clean review notes. You have the best note-taking experience in the world available to you while learning with AI!

AI Tutor is another significant product milestone that helps us move toward our mission. In the past two months, I have taken over 50 lessons using AI Tutor, and the experience is just mind-blowing.
