My husband is diabetic, in insulin and is 56 years old. I worry about his well being.

🔥 Why Extreme Heat Is Risky for Diabetics

1. Dehydration

Diabetics can become dehydrated more easily, especially if blood sugar levels are high, leading to frequent urination.

Dehydration can cause blood sugar levels to rise, creating a dangerous cycle.

2. Blood Sugar Fluctuations

Heat can cause blood sugar to drop (hypoglycemia) if you're taking insulin or sulfonylureas.

On the flip side, dehydration and heat stress can increase blood sugar levels.

3. Reduced Circulation and Nerve Damage

Many diabetics have poor circulation or neuropathy, which can make it harder to feel symptoms of overheating or heat stroke.

4. Insulin & Medication Sensitivity

Heat can alter how your body absorbs insulin.

Some diabetes medications can increase the risk of sunburn or overheating.

5. Insulin Storage Concerns

Insulin and glucose meters can be affected by extreme heat. Insulin can degrade if stored above recommended temperatures (usually >86°F or 30°C).
