Rwanda banned second-hand clothes in 2018.
President Paul Kagame famously asked: "Why would any African wear used socks or vest of someone from Belgium, France or America? Why can't you make your own?"
Since 2018, Rwanda has halted the importation of second-hand clothing to protect and grow its local textile industry, promote "Made in Rwanda" products, and strengthen economic independence.
This is why you won't see the massive piles of imported clothing waste in Rwanda that are common in many other African countries.
In 2023, Rwanda's 🇷🇼 President Paul Kagame acknowledged cheers from citizens.
Rwanda staged a comeback from a Civil War in 1990-1994 and the Genocide Against Tutsis in 1994. https://t.co/9vbWn6ShTc

Dear Africans, there is no need to pay thousands of dollars to go and become slaves in other countries. Stay in your countries and create the world you want. You were not created to become world slaves.
