When simulation becomes the norm, it weakens the human capacity for discernment. As a result, our social bonds close in upon themselves, forming self-referential circuits that no longer expose us to reality. We thus come to live within bubbles, impermeable to one another. Feeling threatened by anyone who is different, we grow unaccustomed to encounter and dialogue. In this way, polarization, conflict, fear and violence spread. What is at stake is not merely the risk of error, but a transformation in our very relationship with truth.
A super cool phenomenon is happening today, as a strong cold front dives into the Gulf! Called Tehuano Winds - wind is funneled through the Isthmus of Tehuantepec mountain gap in S Mexico - becoming a wind firehose into the Pacific, with gusts 💨 reaching near hurricane force. These winds bring rough seas, upwell nutrients, and sometimes, when they happen early enough in autumn, can help spawn the spin needed to aid hurricane formation. Science!!
Impresionante.
American independent journalist and storm chaser Jonathan Petramala, known for documenting some of the most extreme weather events on the planet, shared a touching story while reporting from Jamaica.
Petramala mentioned he’d been trying to find a rain jacket since arriving in Jamaica after forgetting his poncho at home. While out filming, he complimented a stranger on her jacket, and to his surprise, that’s when the Jamaican woman — wearing a JFF national football team jacket — offered him hers.
“She just gave me this jacket off her back,” he said.
“But I just wanted to share that story because I want you to keep that in mind. When you see the impacts of Hurricane Melissa and realize people like this are the ones that are being impacted — not just today, not just tomorrow, but days and weeks and months ahead. These are the people in the path of Hurricane Melissa.”
