The Fell Pony Heritage Trust is dedicated to the Fell Pony Hill Breeders whose commitment to the breed means semi-feral herds continue to roam the fells.
Fells on the Fell. Mares above Ullswater at Gowbarrow Hall farm. Fell ponies graze selectively, allowing plenty of habitats for all sorts of wildlife and maintaining pasture that takes in more carbon than mature pine forests. #fellponies#Lakedistrict#rarebreed#Cumbria#farming
Tonight i visit a Lake District farmer group.
No fancy presentations. Just going to turn my chair around and ask them how they are really doing?
Amidst all the new stuff, it is important that @farmernetwork1 asks these questions. Someone has to.

@lakesauctioneer From what I can see you have to own over 12500 acres before ELM payments are awarded, we conservation graze, breeding Fell ponies, maintaining pasture which sequesters more carbon than forestry and will get £8.00 per acre. This will kill small farms and smallholders.
Our native breeds are so hardy - look at this gorgeous #fellpony living high above the clouds. This natural hardiness makes natives the ideal choice for grazing schemes - but it is important not to neglect their welfare - if you enclose them, you’re responsible for them 🐴
Fell ponies above the clouds. When spending time with any breed in it’s native environment, you truly appreciate how special & specific they are to that area. From Exmoor to the Outer Hebrides, our native M&M ponies were developed to live, work, & thrive in tough surroundings
In these parts, farmers produce great food and work with nature every day. @farmernetwork1 is working with local conservationists to hold another cracking on farm event.
Hedges to benefit livestock, wildlife, water and Carbon. It's all about balance

Like most intelligent creatures, Fell ponies are full of curiosity. These two mares are sneaking up on a tractor as soon as the driver has left. This childlike curiosity and intelligence makes them ideal work companions. #Fellponies#Cumbria#farming#rarebreeds#sustainability
Yesterday i had a great day auctioneering at Penrith Mart in the largest machinery sale to date. Many hundreds of farmers came to buy, sell or just for for the craic and social. You are never lonely at an auction
Such an important part of rural life

Cumbria's Fell ponies, selective grazing leaves patches of rushes and long grass which protect small mammals, breeding birds and invertebrates. Obviously this little foal is sleepy after all that conservation grazing. #fellpony#sustainability#rarebreed#Cumbria#conservation
@flamingyam@HeppJ66 Penrith (North Lakes) station is a ten minute walk from Rheged. Stagecoach runs buses to this station. The big Fell pony shows are at Dalemain, sadly without transport links. I hope you can find a Fell-fan to give you a lift. It is quite shocking that there are so few links.
@BuddiC7 Thankfully they are developing normally. Laddie is an idiot, like any other colt, and Grace is an angel, like her mother. They are big enough to wean next month, when they will be six months old.
