As JD Vance described the factory workers who had lost their jobs because of the policies of Joe Biden and the other Washington Insiders, I was reminded of this part of a speech I heard 32 years ago at another Republican Convention:

“My friends, these people are our people. They don’t read Adam Smith or Edmund Burke, but they come from the same schoolyards and the same playgrounds and towns as we come from. They share our beliefs and convictions, our hopes and our dreams. They are the conservatives of the heart.

“They are our people. And we need to reconnect with them. We need to let them know we know how bad they’re hurting. They don’t expect miracles of us, but they need to know we care.”

For too long, Republican leaders ignored Pat Buchanan’s advice. They didn’t reconnect with everyday Americans. They were foolishly willing to cut Social Security or Medicare in order to fund Forever Wars. They were led by warmongers like Dick Cheney & Mitch McConnell or soulless bean counters like Mitt Romney & Paul Ryan.

Those days are over. Donald Trump and JD Vance are conservatives of the heart. The Republican Party isn’t going back.
