Sea otters hold hands while sleeping because they will drift apart if they do not.

They float on their backs in cold open ocean. The current moves them. If a mother lets go of her pup at night, she may wake up half a mile away and unable to find it again. So they grip each other's paws and stay tethered through the dark.

What I keep coming back to about this is that the behavior is genuinely rare. Most sea otters wrap themselves in kelp instead, anchoring to the seafloor like a moored boat. Hand-holding is mostly seen between mothers and pups or between bonded pairs. Some field biologists who have spent decades watching sea otters say they have only witnessed it once or twice in the wild.

The image everyone shares on World Otter Day is the exception, not the rule.

The deeper fact is why they need any of this. Sea otters are the only marine mammal without blubber. Their entire survival depends on the densest fur in the animal kingdom, roughly a million hairs per square inch, trapping air against their skin. They burn 25% of their body weight in food per day just to stay warm.

They are running so close to a thermal cliff that drifting apart at night is not a sentimental risk. It is a survival one.

The hand-holding is what an animal with no margin for error looks like when it sleeps.
