In retrospect, it seems kind of self-defeatingly stupid to negotiate a MOU that depends on your ally - whom you do not really control in any way - agreeing to simply not defend itself anymore.
🇮🇹🇺🇸 Italy's Meloni responds to Trump:
"President Trump, these constant, unprovoked attacks are senseless.
As for my popularity, being your friend certainly has not helped it, nor does it depend on my relationship with you.
My popularity depends on my ability to defend Italy’s national interest, and that is exactly what I have always done.
[The] use [of American bases in Italy] is governed by agreements that we have always respected, and that cannot be violated as long as I am Prime Minister.
Italy remains a sovereign nation.
In any case, my popularity is none of your concern. I suggest you focus on yours."

Here’s my interview with @smotus on his new book about Trump and the GOP. I hope this provides a nice break from the news cycle to zoom out and look at one of the most important stories in American political history through a political science lens.

Breaking: Trump hedges his bets on South Carolina and endorses *both* candidates in the Republican governor's runoff after previously backing Lt. Gov. @PamelaEvette.
Recalls his 2022 endorsement of "ERIC" in a race b/w two candidates named Eric.
Dunlap, one of three progressive options in the race, defeated DCCC-backed Baldacci, who was widely viewed as the most electable candidate.
Democrats now face a steeper hill to hold this Trump +9 seat.
Trump is in a one-sided war with former President Obama, and with the latest MoU with Iran, it just emphasizes just how obsessed he still is with the former president.
