unfortunately in graduate school the act of reading becomes oriented as an extractive practice and thus can easily lose its potential as a ritual of pleasure. sadly, reading becomes an act of harvesting or scavenging citations to cover bases and hedge bets.
It's strange to me how people use the word cope on here--as an insult? What does it imply about the evaluation of mal/adjustment? Isn't posting a way of coping in the first place?
@Evollaqi ...non-reproductive sexual desires/practices (like contraceptive sex, masturbating to an image) are heterosexually bound to the extent that identifications with normative heterosexual desires/practices have been internalized and reproduced
"Bigot" is so loaded that it obscures the issue. Sexual desires are partially shaped by social norms. Could desires not to sleep with trans people be rooted in cisnormativity or transphobia in the same way that exclusively intra-white sexuality can be rooted in white supremacy?
The road from "people should be free to sleep with people of the same sex" to "if you do not want to sleep with someone of the same sex you are a bigot" seems to have been very short
@Evollaqi so by "we" you seem to mean straight people. Hetero-attraction would certainly seem to have an evolutionary basis. But contemporary straightness (exclusive heterosexuality) generally groups together reproductive and non-reproductive sexual practices/desires. my guess is that 1/
@bengalsubahdar ...relational/emotional potentials that I would not attribute to what I perceive to be a more feminine form. I might not *be a misogynist* even while misogynistic logics are playing out in my psyche
@bengalsubahdar Again, hatred/bigotry might be a bad way of framing what I'm interested in here. It would be sufficient for certain unconscious associations to be mobilized in my preferences for larger structural normativities to be at play. Like I might see a masculine form and anticipate...
@bengalsubahdar I think so, although "rooted" may imply a singular explanatory cause; there may be as many or more causes as there are cases of refusal. I am generally not attracted to cis women and less attracted to femmes than to masculine people. I think there's some misogyny in that.
@Evollaqi What do you mean by biological bases for sexual attraction? sexual reproduction? or the physiological capacity and drive to release sexual tension? (obs there's lots of the latter that doesn't aim at the former). or something else?
@sammillsguitar @lesboseroroki @AyoCaesar No means no between a person asking and being asked to have sex with one another. If I'm hanging out with a friend and they express racist sexual preferences ("I would never...") then I am for sure interrogating that.
But is it a moral issue? Is someone good or bad based on unconsciously formed sexual desires? Can you will to desire otherwise? absent a process of encounter in which the undesired other becomes an object for your self-discovery journey?
Gender self determination allows us to remember that the color line is threaded at the nexus of cisheteropatriarchy and how it complicates, erases, and modifies indigenous gender/sexual lifeways, contradictions, institutions, etc.
