Time to unpack the mighty HK. I said Hong Kong can be better than Singapore for some people, and many agreed. Here is the case. Hong Kong in grow mode is a machine. And it's a city where you still breathe energy: more vibrant than Singapore, lifestyle-wise, with a culture many find extremely attractive, and nature at the door.

Hong Kong taxation is purely territorial, with 0% capital gains. It taxes what arises in Hong Kong and nothing else. Your dividends from the company in Cyprus, your US stocks, your rental income in Lisbon: out of scope. The system looks at one thing: where the income genuinely arises.

On what you earn in Hong Kong, salaries tax goes 2% to 17% in bands, but it caps at a standard rate of 15% on your net income, 16% above five million HKD (roughly $640K). So the maximum is 15% of your Hong Kong salary, and 0% on everything else. Not bad.

On top of it: 0% on dividends, no VAT, no inheritance tax. Crypto sits under the same rule: investment gains untaxed, trading as a business taxed as profits. MPF, the pension, is 5% capped at HK$1,500 a month.

The catch is the mirror image, and people tend to miss it. Territorial means the source decides, and for work the source is where you sit. If you live in Hong Kong and work from there, that income is Hong Kong income, whoever pays you. Genuine passive income from abroad is untouched. Active work done on the island is taxed, at 15%.

If you care to know what really happened here, it was actually a mistake by the organizers of the event - the Seoul Defense Dialogue hosted by South Korea's Ministry of National Defense.

And this is according to Yonhap, South Korea's national news agency (https://t.co/ntNb9X6kVe) so you can't possibly have a more authoritative source.

As they write, the note was given to the organizers of the event by a military attaché at the Chinese Embassy in South Korea but it was never meant to be delivered to Teodoro on stage.

Direct quote from Yonhap's reporting, translated from the original korean: "the staff member [who received the note] misunderstood it as a note delivered from the Philippine side and handed it as-is to Minister Teodoro who was speaking on stage."

So there you are: a mistake by a Korean staffer.

What I suspect did happen is the most banal thing imaginable: a Chinese embassy staffer stationed in Seoul, attending a forum held in his own city, heard the Philippines making claims about the South China Sea that contradicted China's official position, and he simply did the job of embassy staff: re-stating his country's standard position and asking a conference staffer to pass it to the Philippine side.

The note isn't even addressed to Teodoro, it's not addressed to anyone, it's just a boilerplate statement that restates China's public position on the matter.

This is the type of stuff that happens all the time: breaking news, the job of an embassy is to make sure your country's position is on the record when it's being discussed. That's not "intimidation" or "wolf warrior diplomacy," that's just diplomacy.

In this case, the only reason we hear about it is because a Korean staffer delivered it to the wrong place at the wrong time, and also, of course, because the media are all too ready to frame anything China does - including a staffer's routine note being misdelivered by a Korean employee, as acknowledged by Korea's news agency - as sinister, because that's what the narrative demands.

This sounds completely unreal but I double checked and it's true: the Eiffel Tower was closed on Monday due to a Hindu sect that demanded that all women "make themselves invisible" so their 93-year-old guru wouldn't have to see them.

The sect in question is BAPS - "Bochasanwasi Akshar Purushottam Swaminarayan Sanstha," which roughly translates to "the organization of Swaminarayan followers who believe in Akshar Purushottam, based in Bochasan" (a village in Gujarat).

It's a very wealthy organization with deep ties to Modi's BJP (Modi is himself from Gujarat), known for building mega-temples around the world and whose doctrine demands absolute obedience to a living guru as the sole path to God.

It's not their first controversy: in 2021, the FBI raided their massive New Jersey temple after workers - mostly Dalits, India's lowest caste (the so-called "untouchables") - alleged they'd been lured to the US on fake religious visas, had their passports confiscated, and were forced to work 13-hour days for about $1 an hour, confined to a guarded compound (see https://t.co/kTNzdZWtoe).

Long story short, they just opened a new mega-temple in France (the website: https://t.co/4g6HW9bBPy) - specifically in Bussy-Saint-Georges (30km away from Paris) - presented as "the biggest Hindu temple built in continental Europe in a traditional style" (https://t.co/exbFjzLe2k).

Their guru was there for the inauguration and, as you do, wanted to visit the Eiffel Tower while in France. But, thing is, his doctrine dictates that women must not be in his presence.

And here is where it gets unreal: when his entourage requested a private visit, the Eiffel Tower's management actually agreed to the terms and ordered all female employees - including subcontractors - to hide (https://t.co/Sm7yb5LMFq).

This was on Saturday and, France being France (in a good way), on Monday the women who'd been told to make themselves invisible made themselves very, very visible: the staff went on strike and shut down the Eiffel Tower.

So there you have it, unreal but true: the Eiffel Tower, symbol of the French Republic, is closed because a 93-year-old Hindu guru refuses to be in the presence of women.
