Retired. Posts will be sporadic. Photographing 19th and 20th century churches & some nature photos. Happily married to my soulmate for 48 years and counting!
Another "found beauty". Texture this time. Early morning sun on the weathered wood of the boards underfoot. This is on a boardwalk in Bay Area Park, near Houston. iPhone 13 Pro, 13mm lens.
That's why I said unless there is a lot of spring tension in the harness, which would be poor wiring practice. I've cabled a lot of racks in copper, fiber, and in what it appears to be here, high frequency coax. Never space stuff. In any case, forcing cables in under tension is a recipe for failure.
Found beauty. Some photos I plan, haul out a tripod, bring a certain lens, etc. But some of my favorite photos are the little gems of beauty, symmetry or texture I just happen to see. I’ll post a few. Such as this spreading oil spot on wet pavement on an overcast day. Taken with in iPhone 13 Pro.
19. Bought a new Toyota Corolla in 77, the year Ohio had a sustained January cold snap. Had looked at other cars by Ford, etc., but none on outside lots started after a week of -10 F and below. Toyota salesman showed me a Corolla 5-speed with about an 18” snow drift behind it. Clearly untouched since the snow the week before. It started right up, and popped through the drift. Learned to drive a stick on the 30 mile drive home. In the blizzard of ‘78, it was the only car in my neighborhood that was still mobile after a -27 night. Still drive a Toyota Echo 5 speed. Now a 24 year old car and still reliable.
So here’s while I am NOT voting for Dr. Amy Acton:
During COVID, I watched her daily briefings, and believed her recommendations. Data _made public_ since, shows that those recommendations: masking, social distancing, even the COVID vaccine, were NOT based on science. She has cherry picked COVID fatality rates since to justify her positions. We are still seeing the impact of masking on childhood development today. With her medical training and access to information as Ohio’s Director of Public Health, she should have been capable of identifying the flawed recommendations. Instead, she just parroted the recommendations coming down from leadership, such as Dr. Fauci. I believe she will follow the same path as Governor, following the increasingly radical Democrat leadership.
In interviews, when asked about men/boys competing in women/girls sports, she states that Ohio law prevents this, and as governor, she’ll follow the law. This may sound reassuring to parents of girls, but I note that the policy on her website states: “As governor, I am committed to standing up against discrimination and ensuring that every Ohioan — including members of the LGBT community — receives equal protection under the law.” In other words, she’ll support changing Ohio’s laws to cater to a fringe “trans” minority. She didn’t need to include the “T” in the acronym.
The recent “assassination attempt” news stories, exaggerated the security response to a man pushing his way through a line at a public event. No weapons were brandished, no threats made. Dr. Acton wasn’t approached. The exaggerated response from her campaign is an indication that young “true believers” are controlling her campaign, and preventing a face-to-face with her opponent @VivekGRamaswamy . These young staffers also push sex-change surgery, hormone dosing in puberty, and unrestricted abortion.
Finally, I’m a biologist. It is a simple biological fact that human life starts at conception, and that abortion ends this life. Abortion is not “reproductive care”, it is ending a human life. It is also a simple fact that current law allows treatment of ectopic pregnancy, molar pregnancy and miscarriage: these are not abortions of a viable human life. I’ve got to question the adherence to science, fact and their oath, that a medical doctor has in order to support abortion. It seems that ideology in Dr. Acton’s case, trumps biological fact. She pledges to protect and _expand_ “reproductive care” as governor, i.e., abortion.
We do not need a fact-ignoring ideologue as the governor of Ohio.
@cb_doge T-Mobile will still have dead zones along international borders. Check their t-satellite coverage map at Voyageurs National Park, and zoom in. Just a couple miles either side of the border. Also Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.
@newscientist When we regulated the sulfur in marine fuels in 2020, it reduced the aerosols ships formed, which led to unintended atmospheric warming. https://t.co/vYxhxkd3W5
@CoryOnBrand@Meta@finkd 1) This is why I don’t use Facebook: I’ve read their EULA. 2) I post lots of photos: scenic, birds, flowers, but not identifiable people.
Yesterday’s post about the trials and tribulations of GWOT showers made me recall my fascination with “jingle trucks” bringing in supplies. Just things that remind you that you’re not in Kansas anymore…
SO TRUE! For a contractor, all but the rifle. And of course in Kandahar's "South Park", when you are billeted next to third-country nationals, you have the multi-language sign admonishing "Don't Sh*T In Shower", as apparently the drain channels in the shower look like the toilets some places. What IS that smell??? And you can always spot to female shower tent by its border of razor wire around the flaps.
Jeff Bezos @JeffBezos , I’m asking you to look at this once through the eyes of the people wearing the uniform since you own @washingtonpost.
We volunteered and accepted the bargain. Missed birthdays, broken bodies, years away from our families, hostile fire, and the possibility that if we die, our families get roughly $500,000 in life insurance. In much of America today, that barely buys a house.
We know our lot and we’re not complaining about it.
But the job is hard enough without having to wonder whether an American newspaper is going to publish classified wartime command deliberations because its newsroom despises the administration and wants another cheap political scalp.
Fight the President, the Secretary, the Pentagon. Whatever, that’s politics.
But when the ammunition for that fight is information tied to ongoing operations and the private judgments of senior commanders, you’re spending our risk to buy your headline.
That’s the part WE need you to understand.
Murphy already gets a vote. So does the enemy. Exhaustion, bad intelligence, mechanical failure and plain rotten luck all get votes. We volunteered to face those things.
We did NOT volunteer to become collateral damage in the Washington Post’s feud with an administration it hates.
Your reporters will publish the piece, watch the engagement numbers, and go home.
Some American kid will still be standing watch when they do.
Jeff, give us a fucking chance. Come on man. You’ve got to clean house at that paper. The journalists are too blackpilled to be of any use anymore. In fact, they’re literally harming us.
Our brothers and sisters are in a worse situation now due to this reporting. Don’t agree with the combat operations, fine. But come on. Leaking an SDOB? That’s objectively insane behavior.

I do enjoy the Boundary Waters Wilderness Canoe Area on the Minnesota/Canada border. Miles and miles of pristine lakes and boreal forests. The best place I've found for wilderness solitude. Glad to see it re-open after this summer's aggressive wild fires.
She’s doing the flashy bow-staff moves for the camera. I forget what level TKD black belt she is, but she certainly knows the staff moves that will quickly leave you without kidneys, testicles, and a concussion. I was impressed with their lethality as a brown belt, but they are not nearly as flashy.
