The best advice on how to be successful Iโve heard:
On Nick Sabanโs radio show, a young athlete asked him a bold question.
What advice would the Alabama football coach give him โ a basketball player โ to improve in his sport?
Sabanโs response is gold:
โI think for any athlete, it's the same thing. What's your goal? What's your aspiration? What do you want to accomplish? That's the first thing.
โSecond thing is to define what it takes to do it. What does it entail for you to be the kind of basketball player that you want to be?
โThen you got to make the decision. Are you willing to do that? Are you willing to go work every day and do the things you need to do and take 500 shots a day like Kobe Bryant did so that you can be the kind of player that you want to be?
โAnd then do you have enough discipline to make yourself do it every day? Whether you feel like it or not.
โYou got to choose to get up. You got to choose to study. You got to choose to go make the shots. You got to choose to work out. People that can do that, they can reach their full potential.
โIf you choose to make that kind of commitment to it, you can do the same thing, but it's not going to just come to you. It's not going to come easy.
โAnd you're going to have to overcome a lot of adversity to be able to persevere and sustain it to get where you want to go.โ
โ
Itโs a beautiful response for sports, business and life.
Replace the young basketball player with yourself โ investor, business owner, manager, teacher, whatever โ and the same framework applies.
Some key takeaways:
1. Everything begins with a vision. What do you want to achieve?
2. Vision alone isnโt enough. You need a detailed plan of how to achieve it.
3. Commitment separates those who dream from those who do. Most people arenโt willing to do what it takes.
4. Daily execution is the hardest (and most valuable) part.
5. Feelings are irrelevant. You can do what needs to be done despite how you feel.
6. One day of effort is overrated. Daily effort is underrated.
7. Improvement is a lifelong process. Embrace it, cherish it, commit to it.

Michael Jordan said, "It was the turning point of my life."
In the summer of 1980, Michael Jordan had just finished his junior year at Laney High.
It was his first year on varsity as a starter.
He had a great year, but he wasn't being heavily recruited until UNC reached out to invite him to their summer camp.
Dean Smith and UNC wanted to keep his recruiting under wraps because they saw his potential.
He came to the camp with kids of all ages including other recruits. Michael DOMINATED. The talent level wasn't the best, but he knew he could compete.
After the camp, Michael's coach wanted to get him more exposure and see how good he truly was.
UNC assistant coach Roy Williams helped get Michael into the Five-Star camp in Pittsburgh. This camp is where the best players played, there were 17 All-Americans and many other top recruits competing for 2 weeks.
Michael Jordan said, "I was so nervous, my hands were sweating. I saw all these All-Americans and I was just the lowest thing on the totem pole. Here I was, a country boy from Wilmington."
He played in his first game and his athleticism was immediately on display. He would fly through the air and soar to the basket.
Michael realized that he had something the other players didn't have. The more he played, the more confident he became. He started to think, "Maybe I can play with these guys."
Howard Garfinkel ran the camp and had a definition for players like Michael Jordan; he called them 1-possesion players because all you have to do is see them once and know they will be great.
His legend grew over those 2 weeks. He was said to have scored 40 points in just 1 half of play versus another team.
He won the MVP of the All-Star game and won 8 other trophies.
That camp put Michael Jordan on the map and schools besides UNC now started to recruit him.
Michael Jordan looking back said, "It was the turning point of my life."
Takeaway:
Confidence is a journey of self-discovery and growth. We all experience fear and self-doubt, but it's our competence that builds our confidence.
These feelings are universal and are natural responses to challenging situations. However, it is through learning, practice, and hard work that you build and strengthen your confidence. Michael Jordan felt those feelings before camp, but he leaned on his mastery of the game. When you've done the work and practiced hard, pressure is an opportunity for you to rise.
"If you are confident you have done everything possible to prepare yourself, then there is nothing to fear." - Michael Jordan (later in life)

The stories and quotes referenced come from Michael Jordan: The Life by Roland Lazenby. Amazing book and a must-read on the life of Michael Jordan.
Being mentally tough is about:
Giving your best effort
Pushing through discomfort
Focusing on the task at hand
Blocking out distractions
Facing your fears
And staying poised under pressure
โWhatever it takesโ is what separates average from great from elite.
Are you willing to pay the price?
Donโt wish for itโฆwork for it!
If you want to achieve moreโฆyou have to be willing to do more!
Don't be upset by the results you don't get from the work that you didn't do.
Success doesn't come easily or without effort.
Success isn't a handout, it's something you earn.
Compete!
