@NoblestCalling I no longer teach Medieval English lang/lit, but if I did, I would be asking to borrow your child’s excellent list next time I did “intro to: formal spelling rules do not exist, accents and dialect affect spelling, and and sometimes the scribe is making it up”.
@icelandsvagina@uncanny_eli Oh, your take is also completely plausible to me - but I don’t think that’s a necessary belief in order to believe that a, something has gone wrong and/or b, we need to actively aspire to a system that can provide SUCH a person - not necessarily this one, but she’s hardly alone -
@icelandsvagina@uncanny_eli history of commitment to radical politics. And i HOPE create fewer people stuck in antagonistic false binaries, but who knows.
@icelandsvagina@uncanny_eli And I do not even want to set the bar at Ky Schevers: i want to set the bar at “this annoying as fuck person can sort their shit out” (including, perhaps, finding less appalling ways to be cis), which would make things safer for many many people who don’t have Ky Schevers’
@icelandsvagina@uncanny_eli Correct. This person is quite clearly still experiencing gender dysphoria, and if they ever get a grip, they SHOULD have access to a range of transition options, and a shit ton of affirming therapy - quite understandably they’re not going to find many trans people willing to
@twisted_panic@TinyWriterLaura Same in Australia. Not just supermarkets: i worked in a stationery stop and heaven help you if you were found leaning, or propping your foot up on a box under the desk, while on registers
Dr Ally Louks is in the building.
Cambridge PhD student Dr @DrAllyLouks from @Peterhouse_Cam went viral last year when she posted a photo of her thesis on the politics of smell in modern and contemporary prose.
Here's her story about what happened next 👇
@Bella68416451@DrAllyLouks stuff but there are definitely more routes. And it’s more complicated than just “racist origin? Cancelled!”
I think what I’ve concluded here is that I want to see @DrAllyLouks cameo on @badgayspod
@Bella68416451@DrAllyLouks Sometimes things that are extremely “paging Edmund Saïd” turn up in weird “this seems fetishising??” places that certainly don’t involve the Arab sphere and might not in the immediate context involve race. I can sketch out why for Historical Gay (and sometimes lesbian or trans)
@Bella68416451@DrAllyLouks You have to poke at the exact time period and context (including racial) of a “this scent is luxurious - positive”, that’s a job for a real olfactory ethicist.
*doffs hat to @DrAllyLouks *
@Bella68416451@DrAllyLouks If you’re seeing it associated with luxury in a GOOD way, that’s not incompatible with what I just reeled off - same reason Europeans & white Americans were buying shiploads of cloth from the “east” to decorate their homes while being weird about the culture of origin.
