Moscow this morning.

I was thinking about something: as a result of the severe socio-economic consequences of this catastrophically failed war against Ukraine, Russia is facing a long and painful economic decline, social upheaval, massive disorganization, a huge rise in organized crime, and the shock of defeat -- the new 1990s after the collapse of the USSR.

And the most "amusing" part is that when the reckoning for this barbaric invasion of Ukraine finally comes, and the consequences of their deranged fascist regime in the Kremlin become apparent, Russians will once again be sighing and saying how good life was "under Putin" and how everything needs to be put back the way it was.

What I think is this: Putin will announce a new large-scale wave of mobilization in Russia, and he will do it this fall, most likely after yet another sham "Duma election" in September.

As always, Putin will drag things out until the very last moment, postponing the inevitable.

By autumn, the current large-scale drone mid-strike campaign across occupied southern and eastern Ukraine, combined with strikes against targets throughout the European part of Russia and mounting manpower shortages, will have undermined Russian logistics and supply lines to such an extent, and degraded combat effectiveness on certain sectors of the front so severely -- that Russia may once again face the prospect of the kind of military collapses and routs seen in the autumn of 2022 around Kharkiv and in northern Donbas.

(It was after those setbacks, after all, that the Kremlin finally resorted to mobilization in September 2022.)

It is even possible that Ukraine could achieve victories comparable to the Kharkiv offensive or the liberation of Kherson once again.

Under such circumstances, Putin would find himself completely cornered, and a massive mobilization of cannon fodder would become his only way to prevent further defeats.

As has been said and written many times before, since 2022 the Russian authorities have been steadily building the organizational and legislative infrastructure necessary for another large-scale mobilization, taking into account the lessons and mistakes of the 2022 experience.

This includes the total digitalization of draft notices through state online services, the creation of a unified digital registry of reservists, and legal mechanisms for prosecuting and restricting the rights of draft evaders.

I believe that the next wave of forced mobilization will effectively amount to closing the borders to military-age men, or more precisely, banning travel for those listed in the draft registry who receive an electronic summons but fail to report.

(And I suspect that most of them will obediently show up to die in a ditch for their tsar's delusions of grandeur.)

By that point, Putin will no longer care about the obvious political and economic consequences such a move would have for Russia. We have been discussing those consequences for years, and they are precisely what appears to have restrained him from declaring full mobilization, forcing the Kremlin instead to spend enormous sums buying willing cannon fodder with lavish bonuses.

This man, seemingly losing the last remnants of rational judgment, would gladly throw even his own mother into a crematorium alive if it allowed him to spend a little longer drawing arrows on a map and postponing the admission of defeat at the hands of Ukraine -- which he hates with a ferocity that has long crossed into dumb obsession.

We'll see whether I turn out to be right.

BREAKING: Pete Hegseth is spiraling so badly he’s now bringing his wife to Pentagon meetings as he purges his generals and lives in fear of being fired by Trump!

According to a new report, Secretary of War Crimes Pete Hegseth has grown increasingly isolated and paranoid inside the Pentagon.

In response, he’s started bringing his wife, Jennifer Rauchet (a former Fox News producer), to meetings with staffers, where she sits in the back of the room.

Hegseth has also packed his inner circle with his brother Phil (now a senior advisor) and personal lawyer Tim Parlatore, who has also represented Trump.

This comes as Hegseth has fired or forced out more than two dozen senior military officials, about 60 percent of them Black or female, in his crusade to impose a “warrior ethos” on the Pentagon.

One of those ousted was Navy Secretary John Phelan, reportedly after he refused to ignore a federal judge’s order.

The man in charge of the U.S. military during an active war is so insecure and unstable that he needs his wife and family members in the room for support while he purges experienced leaders.

This is what happens when you put Fox News personalities and conspiracy-minded loyalists in charge of the Pentagon instead of serious professionals.

This is what it looks like when you’re critically out of your depth, yet still trying to speak about things you have absolutely no understanding of -- things you neither care about nor even grasp, because they lie far beyond the horizon of your knowledge and your thinking.

Go ask those questions to your Russian counterparts whether they should keep grinding hundreds of thousands more of their own people into a bloody pulp over a few square kilometers of territory.

And no -- you are not smarter than the Ukrainians who have been fighting for years over those “few square kilometers” in Donbas.

It means nothing to you but for people here on the ground, the Sloviansk–Kramatorsk area is the largest defensive stronghold, fortified and prepared for battle for over a decade, and one the Russians have been trying to break for just as long, including four years of full-scale war.

What looks like a stupid inconvenience to your boss, something standing in the way of what he imagines will be profitable deals with the Kremlin, is, for Ukraine, the main defensive line protecting the country’s heartland from a deeper breakthrough.

Ukrainians refuse to surrender it not because they are less clever than JD Vance, but because they understand exactly what the consequences would be and what the word of Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump is worth.

And that’s not even getting into the fact that this is the homeland of hundreds of thousands of people, their homes, their land, which they would be forced to abandon.

It’s about abandoning our own people and their hopes, about a nation and its sovereignty, things that are often absent from this kind of discussion.

You see, people here in Ukraine are dealing with matters far more serious and consequential than posturing in front of TV cameras, talk this delusional arrogant BS, and acting as a rally agitator for a corrupt authoritarian in Central Europe that your boss likes very much.
