When does an opinion become hate speech?
We all have the right to disagree, but where do you draw the line between expressing an opinion and attacking or dehumanising another person or community?

What do misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech have to do with peacebuilding?
In the Great Lakes Region of Africa, the information we create, share, and consume can either strengthen understanding or deepen existing divisions.
In a region where communities continue to navigate the effects of conflict, displacement, and division, harmful narratives can undermine trust and social cohesion. So, how can we become more responsible consumers and creators of information and use our voices to advance peace, dialogue, and reconciliation across the Great Lakes Region?
Join us for the twitterthon, as we engage young people on this important topic. Through this engagement, we hope to unpack the issues of misinformation, disinformation, and hate speech and explore their implications for peacebuilding, not only in the Great Lakes Region but also around the world.
This is a build up to the upcoming National Peace Leadership Conference: ‘Youth against Misinformation, Disinformation and Hate Speech’ in Kampala on 30th September 2026 that is intended to strengthen youth leadership on topical issues while creating awareness and stakeholder collaboration in preventing misinformation, dis-information and hate speech towards promoting social cohesion and peace both online and offline.
