Congrats to @eklucas being named the inaugural recipient of the “Diana Fuentes Service to IRE Award.” More from @IRE_NICAR: https://t.co/7VS78WUjol #IREforAll@ddfonline
The inaugural Diana R. Fuentes Service to IRE Award will be presented to Liz Lucas, an associate professional practice professor at the University of Missouri-Columbia’s Missouri School of Journalism, whose career has been marked by excellence in data journalism, investigative reporting and journalist training.
Since earning her master’s degree from the Missouri School of Journalism, Liz has worked in newsrooms as a data reporter and editor on investigative teams covering health, politics and the environment. Her reporting has been recognized as a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize in Investigative Reporting and the Goldsmith Prize for Investigative Reporting, and has earned honors from SABEW, AHCJ and ONA. Her work has appeared in The New York Times, NPR, Fortune, Bloomberg, USA Today, STAT, the Chicago Tribune, the Daily Beast, HuffPost and GateHouse Media.
Liz served as a data director at IRE from 2012 to 2016, becoming a training director from 2022-2024. In her role as a training director, she developed and taught courses in data analysis and investigative reporting and trained thousands of journalists in the U.S. and abroad.
And as another part of our commitment to honoring Fuentes’ legacy, the IRE Board approved her nomination to IRE’s Ring of Honor, which recognizes members who have made significant contributions to the organization and to investigative journalism. The $2,500 donation benchmark was met quickly, reflecting the deep admiration and respect Fuentes inspired across the journalism community.
IRE welcomes additional donations in Fuentes’ memory to support the creation of a training fund in her name, helping ensure her impact continues to empower future generations of journalists: https://t.co/2JQTlMMyrf
