DEAR BROTHER,

The judgment has been delivered. I am condemned to death. In these cells, besides myself, there are many others prisoners who are waiting to be hanged.

The only prayer of these people is that somehow or other they may escape the noose. Perhaps I am the only man amongst them who is anxiously waiting for the day when I will be fortunate enough to embrace the gallows for my ideal.

I will climb the gallows gladly and show to the world as to how bravely the revolutionaries can sacrifice themselves for the cause.

I will condemned to death, but you are sentenced to transportation for life. You will live and, while living, you will have to show to the world that the revolutionaries not only die for their ideals but can face every calamity.

Death should not be a means to escape worldly difficulties. Those revolutionaries who have by chance escaped the gallows for the ideal but also bear the worst type of torture in the dark dingy prison cells.

This letter Bhagat Singh wrote to Batukeshwar Dutt.

Comrade Botukeshwar Dutt, Bhagat Singh's close mate who awarded life imprisonment in 1929 in cellular Jail. There he shook the Jail Admin with Hunger Strikes & Protests.

After releasing despite suffering from broken health he joined the Quit India movement & again sent to jail where he remained until 1947 Independence.

Kept raising the slogan of ‘Inquilab Zindabad’ (Long live the revolution)...

After independence?
1. Worked as a cigarette company agent,
2. Sold biscuits and bread for a living.

In 1964, when Batukeshwar Dutt fell ill he could not find a bed in Govt Hospital. His friend and fellow freedom fighter, Chamanlal Azad, wrote an angry letter to the editor of a newspaper, stating that India does not deserve a revolution.

In Dec 1964 he shifted to Delhi. The then Punjab Chief Minister visited Batukeshwar Dutt in hospital and offered him financial aid.

He made only one request, to be cremated where his friend Comrade Bhagat Singh had been cremated. It was fulfilled within the next few months.

The then-President of India also came to meet him at the hospital. Despite the fact this radical leftist was not in politics, living a below-average life dared to say the President of India
