Science exists—and proves things with evidence in validated peer-reviewed studies.
History exists—& sometimes, the past is ugly.
Denying the existence of science and history in all its complexity doesn’t erase them.
More than anything else, it reveals the fear of the deniers.

I think the most frustrating part for me about being a teacher right now is that the school system is like, “You need to change everything about what you do.”
And when we’re like, “Can you maybe change a little bit to help us?”
They’re like, “Lol. Don’t be stupid.”
Kindness matters.
But kindness does not = justice.
Unity matters.
But calls for unity are often about maintaining an unjust status quo.
Civility matters.
But civility without justice = false peace.
We need true peace, which includes justice.
Let's unite for that.
It’s actually simple: If you can feel pride in things you didn’t personally take part in, then you can feel shame in things you didn’t personally take part in. Some of you are motivated to make this hard, but it’s only hard bc you want the glory of our history but not the burden.

So often teachers are labeled as “resistant to change.” But the problem is that change is too frequent, rarely enduring and almost always mandated. To restore teachers’ belief in the power of change and innovation, we need to empower teachers to be the drivers of it.

A focus on increasing "rigor," "raising the bar," demanding "higher standards," etc. usually means teaching the same sorts of things in pretty much the same way, except now with fewer students being able to succeed.

1/6 my new article, "The Sciences of Reading Instruction" is now out in @ASCD 's @ELmagazine. In it I get to write about how "polarizing pitches" about what counts as the #scienceofreading are a lot like the claims made within in the diet/fitness industry
