“There aren’t many people in my life I didn’t tell about getting to play in the Women’s FA Cup.”

The Athletic's @hmdrudge played in the tournament last year with tier seven team, South London Women FC. Though they were knocked out by two-time winners Fulham, she saw firsthand what it did for the community - even beyond prize money.

This week, the FA delayed implementing changes that could eventually remove her team from the competition. The uncertain future is putting what makes the tournament so special at risk.

The FA has proposed a raft of significant reforms to the Women’s FA Cup including seeding four teams, replacing the draw with a World Cup-style bracket from the last 32 and excluding tier seven clubs from the competition.

The FA is bidding to make its flagship competition more marketable, particularly in its later stages, sources say, but the proposals wield an especially profound effect on lower-tier clubs.

“The FA Cup is not broken for 99 per cent of clubs and the interests of the very few at the top of the game should never override the majority and lifeblood of our game,” said a source.

My daughters have watched Salford City with me for 10 years and like to comment on football, my mum was kicked out of the football team ( boys in the 1960’s) and stopped playing due to mysogyny , my sister struggled for funding for her sport for years and my brother was mocked when he took over the England women’s team. I come from a family that has fought these issues for years and I’ve witnessed it first hand.
All this does is just discourage and it’s not the way forward.
