The US has appealed into the void its losses on steel/aluminum tariffs and on the "made in China" label for Hong Kong goods. US lost both issues on national security grounds and is not best pleased...
Update for those following the @wto TRIPS expansion talks (i.e. deciding whether to extend agreed benefits for COVID-19 vaccines to tests & treatments): Members agreed to extend the deadline, which had been set for tomorrow. No new date given, so now it's 2023's problem...
Because panel reports determine the national security exception does not apply, the tariffs are subject to regular WTO rules -- and do not pass muster (specifically with GATT Article I, II and XI)
Interestingly, the reports were released for only four of the six open cases on this issue (from China, Turkey, Norway and Switzerland). The disputes instigated by India and Russia remain pending...
After four years of waiting, the @wto has finally ruled on the 232 tariffs. As I think most were expecting, it did not go the US' way, but as evidenced from @ustr's statement that is not going to deter them
