The recent earthquake made headlines everywhere and it was my first time feeling one. Still feels a bit unreal. As a digital nomad who spends half of my time in Bangkok, and with my girlfriend being from Myanmar, I’ve been paying extra attention to this disaster.
We are really grateful to see @cz_binance's generosity and the donation announcement just a day after the quake. But after looking into the details of @binance’s aid plan, a few concerns have been raised by relevant parties:
1. KYC-based airdrop — The current plan only gives aid to KYC-verified users on Binance. But the people most affected by the quake likely don’t have Binance accounts, let alone internet access or KYC verification.
2. Aid misdirection — There are already cases of people outside the impacted zones trying to manipulate their KYC info to claim the airdrop. This kind of system can end up helping the wrong people.
3. Local impact — If the same 500 BNB was directed toward local NGOs or relief teams on the ground, it could support food, shelter, and medical help. Stuff people actually need right now.
4. Missing regions — The most affected areas, like Sagaing, aren’t even included in the current eligible list. That needs to be double-checked.
A note from relevant parties via @swanhtet1992:
The donation is a reminder that crypto can be a powerful tool for good — but only when applied in the right context. There’s still hope that the current approach can be adjusted to create real impact for those who truly need support right now. Original thread: https://t.co/l2CXhhjduK
Last but not least, as someone who’s close to the Binance ecosystem through @BNBCHAIN and @CoinMarketCap, I genuinely hope this message reaches the right people and that the funds truly go to those who need it most.
Let’s keep Myanmar and Thailand in our thoughts. 🕊️

1/ Binance’s earthquake relief plan for Myanmar is well-intentioned but deeply flawed. A $5 or $50 BNB airdrop to KYC-verified users isn’t real aid. Earthquake survivors need food, water, shelter—not crypto sitting in an exchange. This needs to change. 🧵👇

The Myanmar’s junta labeling of the rival National Unity Government as a "terrorist group" won't change the fact that the NUG represents the public's overwhelming desire for democracy rather than another brutal military dictatorship. https://t.co/iZvGZoccgL
One month ago today, on Apr 9, hundred of the unarmed civilians were killed by the atrocities of the terrorists(SAC) of #MurdererMinAungHlaing in Bago Region. The locals had to flee to countryside for their safety.

The daily shows of defiance of Myanmar’s junta take place in many parts of the country. Sometimes the crowds are big, sometimes fewer people brave the risk of violence, but they have not been stopped #WhatsHappeningInMyanmar
