A huge % of classrooms aren’t built to support kids experiencing trauma and/or chronic absenteeism. Relying on live lectures and fixed-paced learning sends the message to kids that if they don’t make it to class ready to learn, they lost their chance to access a quality lesson.
Interleaving is when we give students opportunities to work through combinations of related ideas and concepts—instead of limiting them to a one-skill-at-a-time approach.

Kids need opportunities for unstructured socializing with peers outside of school hours—and it's especially important for teens.

Kids who feel perpetually rushed and confused start to ask themselves concerning questions like:
1. Why am I always lost?
2. Why am I so bad at school?
3. Maybe I am not built for education?
When the pattern continues, students no longer believe in the power education. 2/3
THREAD: It’s convenient to have every kid transition to the next lesson at the same time, but the consequences of fixed paced learning are destructive. The damages on students’ sense of self-worth in the classroom are real and hard to recover from. 1/3

The greatest danger of overusing edtech is that personalized learning suddenly becomes incredibly impersonal. Building an effective blended learning environment is all about lean tech. Less is more sometimes and the technology should lead to more 1-1 and small group interactions.
Building stronger connections with students, empowering them, and finding new ways to define success are keys to a better future.

Favor: name the 3 ships Columbus had when he “discovered” America...now name the indigenous tribe that came close to extinction because of that “discovery.” If you can’t do both than that is a small glimpse into failures of an educational system choosing tradition over truth. 1/2
One way to destroy a kid’s love for learning is to rush them through lessons without giving them the chance to master content. We can’t ask kids to be persistent if we stop them before they see the benefits of it. We need to worry less about pacing guides and more about mastery.

Overreliance on live delivery of information isn’t just inefficient, it’s inequitable. Kids and adults shouldn’t operate at a disadvantage just because they miss a 20 minute presentation. If we want class to be equitable, we need to start by ensuring content is accessible.

Reflecting on COVID's impact on schools, it seems to me the largest issue we encountered was not closing schools but rather a failure to develop students as self-directed learners. This issue impacts students whether schools are open or closed.
#PBIS doesn't mean that discipline practices have to be ignored. Continue to build relationships even with negative #behavior. There are still consequences for (positive and negative) behavior, but #relationships help strengthen meaningful #conversations that can elicit #change.
