The Frankenstein aspect is what's driving the debate.

The possibility of a serious accident is high. Frameworks in other industries do prevent accidents or contain, but not infallibly. I know I keep bothering people with it, but chemical factories have lots of dangerous items. We are protected from those by professional standards, liability, self-interest- and best practices that were developed in the companies themselves, and then-as accidents happened-were given the force of law and became subject to outside audits and oversight.

Still, a very deadly accident happened in Washington state last year.

AI has messed up a website. That's bad. And sure we should discuss it because so many crucial systems have been rebuilt on digital foundations. But 17 people were killed in an industrial accident last year - and most of us trust the system to handle it, or at least- we aren't all calling for a global intervention to handle it.

Obviously the models are powerful.

But if you make the companies liable for everything anyone does with them, you create industry of predatory lawyers who loot the entrepreneurs by manufacturing hysteria and exploiting every mistake.

This has happened in many industries for decades and it cripples the economy.
