“yeah well. no thank you. i have a cat. a baby cat. he depends on me.” he’s probably saying too much, but at least he’s made up his mind, “you can totally get in the bowling alley for free. you can even bring your friends. hell, i will throw a party for you if you want.”
if he had anything in his stomach right now, he would maybe vomit. this is the kind of shit he only hears inside his head, and this guy is saying it so casually.
“are you for real? you would… like… stab me?”
“oh!” he almost yells, then remembers he needs to lower his voice. this is something he does when he realizes he’s somehow fucked up, “oh. sorry, sir. didn’t mean to imply those birds would… you know… fight to the death in front of your children.”
ash frowns. he thinks he feels slightly offended, but he will also keep the dollar. he takes it, folds it in half, and puts it in his back pocket.
“yeah, well. the bowling alley doesn’t pay much.”
he stares at the dollar and then back at him.
“uhhh… dude, are you sure i can take this? i mean. you, um, sounded kind of desperate for money right there.”
“oh, cool! finches…”
ash doesn’t actually know what finches look like. has he seen them before? surely, but he’s clearly no expert when it comes to the animal kingdom. he can’t /recognize/ them.
“yeah, you do that. it would be awful to have a bird bloodbath on your porch.”
finches, i think.
i don’t think there are eggs this time of year … nor do birds eat one another unless there’s food scarcity. i’ll be sure my feeders are stocked.
/ i like the concept of ash trying to be ridiculously nice to everyone because he hears so much awful shit happening to people inside his head due to the entity that he presumes anyone he meets could be Going Through The Horrors secretly
dropped out at sixteen, he can’t see a future like that for himself.
“ah, kinda. um, i work at the bowling alley? night shift, always. i clean, make sure things stay in place… all that. talk about interesting.”
“um, both, i think?” he offers an awkward smile. he’s managed to place the cans on the table without making a fool out of himself—he now needs to avoid fucking up in general. not his forte.

he will /not/ mention the cans again. he will not. what he does, however, is subtly start to leave them both next to her. yeah. he’s an expert at subtleness.
“umm… is it cool if i ask what your job is?”
“oh yeah! completely understandable. cardiac arrest sounds painful.” he says, awkwardly, trying to avoid the cans falling out while he reaches out to shake her hand. his grip, unsurprisingly, isn’t very firm. “nice to meet you, sophia. you can call me ash instead +

@R1CHIEHARKNESS there’s a slight pang in his heart at hearing richie’s words. ash never had a loving relationship with his parents, and barely knows his mother.
“that sounds nice.” he smiles again, albeit it seems forced this time, “she, uh, lives very far away?”
/ ash is so fun to write so far he’s so cute. i can’t wait for the horrors to catch him and make him go through extremely painful situations regarding the entity
