Tolkien felt the need for an anti-Faustian myth. Frodo and Sam's heroism lies in the renunciation and destruction of the Faustian "will to power" represented by Sauron and the One Ring. The hobbits' quest acts as a counter-revolutionary restoration of the traditional order.
