Problematizing means that they can see how those things contribute to create opportunity gap for minoritized students. In addition to developing this increased critical awareness, they need experiences of developing a new vision of equity and justice-centered science instruction.
A5: Pre-service & in-service educators need well-designed experiences that help them to recognize the contributors of inequity and injustice (their own self, unjust disciplinary pedagogy, unjust system) AND problematize those contributors in relation to students' OTL. #NSTAchat
A4: There are so many strategies to tap into students' experiences when planning, teaching, and assessing! Recently we found using curriulum-embedded, unconventional assessment one promising strategy. #NSTAchat
@caahayes A3: One big lesson that we've got is that equity is not something that we can address using a few strategies. Equity is NOT a checklist. There are many things that we can do with a critical awareness in every single moment, and in every single decision-making.
A2: To promote equity, we should be able to see inequity & injustice--including how various elements inside and outside classrooms contribute to creating inequitable & unjustice learning opportunity. We need to first develop a critical eye to see it and take action #NSTAchat
