Thames Water hires restructuring advisers amid fears of collapse.
Crisis manufactured by years of greed, neglect, regulatory failure and govt obsession with privatisation.
No bailout for Thames. Let it go bust. Nationalise water.

"Modern Monetary Theory does not represent permission to print money to fund government spending as a lot of people think, it’s just a description of the way government finances work."
Absolutely right, @AlanKohler
Quick fact check: all government spending is our money, in the sense that it is issued by our govt. But it doesn’t come from our taxes. If the NHS needs translators, then new money is created to buy them. In doing so, they do not limit their ability to pay for other things. 👇🏻BS
“A new economic theory has emerged that could rewrite our understanding of how governments create and spend money and what type of society we can afford to build.”

There is no such thing as credit card money; there is only public money. And that is created by the Bank of England (BoE) on behalf of HM Treasury when the UK Government spends. As a monopoly issuer of £, the BoE cannot and does not run out of £ - ever.
Stop to think about this for a moment and it’s total nonsense. Of course it is. How can the country that was on its knees after WW2, build a million homes, motorways and the NHS? Where did that money come from. The same place it does now. The govt can buy anything sold in £££s.
This is such a great evergreen thread.
It can sometimes seem like inequality and poverty are simply inevitable and can’t be changed.
Looking back just a few decades, you can see that these are about conscious political choices and can be resisted & reversed.👇
Quite extraordinarily, leading politicians, including Kier Starmer and Rachel Reeves have in the last few days returned to talking about the country maxing out its credit card, just as David Cameron did in 2015. This is utterly absurd. A thread…
Starmer seems to think that the government won't have £28 billion available to beat climate change. Has anyone ever told him that governments create all the money that they spend, out of thin air? None of that spending is funded by tax or borrowing. If only he knew that.....
Will our journalists EVER learn how Govt finances work? More Govt = household bullshit.👇🏻 The UK can afford anything for sale in £s. That includes pensions.
