You call the 2016 arbitral award “illegal, null and void” and accuse the #Philippines of bad faith for invoking it. You rest that accusation on the 2002 Declaration on the Conduct of Parties in the #SouthChinaSea and on the principle that agreements must be kept.

Fine. Let’s take that argument at face value.

The DOC commits its signatories to resolve disputes peacefully, respect freedom of navigation, and exercise self-restraint in activities that would “complicate or escalate” tensions. #China signed those commitments too, so let’s measure its actions against its own signed agreement.

📍 China dredged and filled thousands of acres of coral reef to build artificial islands in the Spratlys, converting pristine reefs into military outposts with runways, harbors, sensors and missile systems.

📍 China seized control of Scarborough Shoal in 2012 and has increasingly blocked Filipino fishermen’s access, devastating the livelihoods of communities up and down the Zambales coastline.

📍 China’s coast guard and maritime militia have repeatedly blocked, rammed, water-cannoned and swarmed smaller Philippine vessels to forcibly assert its absurdly vast maritime claims based on unilaterally declared “historic rights.”

Let's recall that on August 11th of last year, China turned a peaceful Philippine patrol into a deadly high-speed intercept in which a 7,500-ton PLA Navy destroyer bore down on a 350-ton Philippine Coast Guard vessel before colliding with a China Coast Guard ship involved in the same pursuit. This happened while China was enforcing an undeclared (but very real) 30-nautical-mile exclusion zone around the Scarborough Shoal--one which clearly violates the freedom of navigation China promised to respect under the DOC.

That is certainly not the peaceful self-restraint China signed up to.

📍 It is aggression masked as law enforcement--until the mask drops and the guided-missile destroyer shows the world its true, violent face.

📍 It is gaslighting--invoking an agreement as a weapon against a smaller neighbor while blatantly ignoring your own obligations under the very same agreement.

📍 It is highly escalatory and precisely the kind of collision risk the 2016 tribunal correctly found unlawful.

Now you urge the Philippines to abandon the award and “return to bilateral dialogue.” But why on earth would any rational party do that? If China routinely abrogates the pledges it made to all of ASEAN under the DOC, why should the Philippines now trust it alone, one-on-one, bound by no rule Beijing is willing to accept above its own coercive will backed by violence?

The problem isn’t transparency. It’s China’s track record of turning excuses into occupations.

Beijing accuses us of “hyping.” Let us be precise about what actually happened. We observed a structure inside Bajo de Masinloc. We documented it, dated it, geolocated it, and released the aerial imagery to the public. That is not hype — that is transparency. And transparency is only threatening to the party that has something to hide.

To “hype” something is to exaggerate or invent it. We did neither. The imagery speaks for itself, and we put it in front of the Filipino people, the region, and the international community precisely so that no one has to take our word for it — or Beijing’s. The fact that China’s instinct is to attack the reporting rather than explain the structure tells you everything. What is irresponsible is not a coast guard doing its job and informing the public. What is irresponsible is the unilateral placement of structures in another country’s exclusive economic zone, in open defiance of the 2016 Arbitral Award — and then calling the act of documenting it a provocation.

And there is a reason we cannot simply accept Beijing’s description of these as “normal activities.” We have heard this before. When the People’s Republic of China first occupied Mischief Reef in 1995, it assured the world that the structures it was putting up were nothing more than shelters for its fishermen. Today, Mischief Reef is a fully militarized artificial island — runway, hangars, radar, missile capabilities — sitting squarely inside the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone. The “fishermen’s shelter” was the cover story.

So when China waves away the structure at Bajo de Masinloc as “normal,” it is asking the region to forget its own record. That is precisely why these actions cannot be taken at face value.

If China genuinely wants to be believed, there is a simple way to show it: pull out. Remove the platform, halt the installation of buoys/communication towers, and respect the 2016 Arbitral Award and waters that are legally ours. Anything less only confirms the pattern — that China’s assurances at Bajo de Masinloc today are worth exactly what its word at Mischief Reef proved to be three decades ago.

The choice belongs to Beijing. It can preserve what little good faith the region and the international community still extend to it, or it can keep proving why that trust was misplaced to begin with.

🚨WHAT IS CHINA HIDING AT SCARBOROUGH SHOAL?
For days, questions have been growing over a mysterious object spotted at the entrance of Scarborough Shoal inside the Philippines' Exclusive Economic Zone.

Now, a second commercial satellite image has reportedly confirmed that the object was present on at least two separate dates. Even more concerning, the imagery appears to show a curved feature stretching across the lagoon entrance—consistent with a floating barrier.

Think about that.
A mysterious object. A possible barrier. An area under effective Chinese control since 2012. And no clear explanation.

This is why many observers warn about China's so-called "salami-slicing" or "cabbage" tactics—small actions taken one piece at a time, each seemingly insignificant on its own, until a new reality is created before the world fully notices.

First, the ships arrive.
Then access becomes restricted.
Then barriers appear.
Then structures emerge.
And suddenly, what was once open becomes controlled.

If there is nothing to hide, why not answer the questions?

🔹 When was it installed?
🔹 What is its purpose?
🔹 Is it temporary or permanent?
🔹 Why is access becoming increasingly restricted?
The issue is bigger than a single object in the water.

It is about whether gradual encroachment becomes accepted as normal.
It is about whether intimidation and control can replace transparency and international law.

And it is about whether Filipinos—and the world—will pay attention before another piece of the puzzle quietly falls into place.

The satellite images have raised questions.
The public deserves answers.
Silence is not transparency.

And unanswered actions in disputed waters only deepen suspicion.

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has formally included Senator Ronald "Bato" Dela Rosa on its public wanted list on Wednesday.

The warrant, originally issued under seal on November 6, 2025, was made public on May 11, 2026.

The charges pertain to his role as the Philippine National Police chief, citing alleged responsibility for crimes against humanity during the Duterte administration.

Meanwhile, the profile of former president Rodrigo Duterte is also seen in the website with a state that read, "in ICC custody."
