We are right to be outraged by billions lost to corrupt flood-control projects.

But we must also confront the sea of basura around us.

Turning canals, esteros, and waterways into garbage dumps is another form of corruption, the breakdown of discipline, responsibility, and respect for nature.

We must demand clean, accountable government. But we must also take responsibility for our environment.

Corrupt officials steal from the people.
Irresponsible citizens destroy the country we all share.

And when floods come, everyone pays the price.

Fight corruption in government. But also fight the corruption in ourselves.
