Blimey! My rant about @guardian article on Alzheimer's seems to have gained some traction. Here is a simple guide: if you want to know about the experience of the disease, ask ppl with it. To know about the experiences of carers, ask them. But don't claim the latter as former 🧵
For everyone who works w/families in caregiving relationships and/or does caregiving research and insists on using the term “loved one”, please read and absorb this thread. There are all kinds of family relationships and we need to avoid retraumatizing people thru our assumptions
Just spoke w/ a reporter about the possibility of more visitor restrictions in #LTC due to Omicron. We need to be very clear: older people in care homes have a right to see their friends and family. We know measures can be taken to safeguard this pop'n and avoid new restrictions.
Excited to continue this important work with some great partners - @safecarebc@BCNursesUnion BC Hospital Employees’ Union @bcgeu. Thank you @msfhr for recognizing the importance of facilitating psychological safety for front-line workers in our LTC homes.
So pleased to receive a REACH grant to continue working with @hsmithcooke on knowledge translation activities from her @msfhr funded post-doctoral research:
"Civility matters: Co-creation of an online toolkit for long-term care home staff"
Having spent May/June interviewing family members of LTC residents, intrigued to see only 1/365 outbreaks in which 1st confirmed COVID case was a visitor. Would #s have been higher with less restrictive visitation? Hard to know but data suggests a rethink of restrictive policies.
Today, the Office of the Seniors Advocate released our report reviewing COVID-19 outbreaks in care homes in British Columbia. The report can be found on our website at https://t.co/4O5bOyTDTD #bcpoli
Today is #InternationalDayOfOlderPersons. If you teach in a healthcare profession program please advocate for a course focused on this population. Almost all of us, will spent alot of time caring for older people in the coming years.

Pleased to hear this announcement but thinking about caregivers in our current @GERONursing study who have HSWs coming into their homes. How do we protect families & workers in community settings??
Excited to be talking about the importance of staff relationships & civility in LTC at the Virtual Embrace Aging event tomorrow. Still not too late to sign up!
Excited to share two pubs on RCAs’ workplace relationships & incivility in LTC with @GERONursing. Check-out 1) RCAs’ Experiences of Workplace Incivility in LTC https://t.co/BynYrongDM & 2) Not Just How Many but Who’s on Shift https://t.co/b1h5pbqsI1 @WESjnl@geronsociety 1/3
While conducted pre-COVID (in)civility matters now more than ever. Bhrs occur at individual level, but ongoing structural issues - gendered envt, excessive workload, limited resources, limited control & influence over one’s work – impact relationships & normalize incivility 2/3
@csfoot@Ageing_Better Thanks so much for sharing @csfoot & @AgeingBetter. As someone who uses ++ images during lectures, I’m excited to use these in my Aging & Society @SFUGero course this term.
Thrilled to be part of this year’s #HeartsandHands virtual conference celebrating HCAs. Systemic issues in #LTC magnified by #COVID19 make our Civility Matters: A Coffee Break Chat so very timely. Thanks to @safecarebc for making this happen!
