Pleased to join African leaders at the launch of #ACHIEVEAfrica at the #AUSummit.
Africa represents 17% of the world’s population but only 0.1% of global vaccine production, while accounting for about a quarter of global demand. The AU’s commitment to produce 60% of vaccines used on the continent by 2040 is therefore both strategic and necessary.
This ambition requires more than manufacturing. It demands an end-to-end ecosystem built on strong regulatory systems, African led R&D and sustainable financing.
@WHO stands ready to provide institutional and technical support, working with partners to ensure vaccines for Africa are developed, tested and produced on the continent to the highest standards of quality and safety.
Arrived in Addis Ababa 🇪🇹 for the 39th #AUSummit.
This is a critical moment to advance Africa’s health agenda. @WHOAFRO is here to engage with leaders and partners to drive Africas health priorities and ensure #HealthForAll for every African.
Looking forward to fruitful deliberations.
Grateful for strategic discussions today with Tom Pilcher, UK’s International AMR Policy Lead; Niall Fry, Head of Global Health Security at @FCDOGovUK; and Jason De Bono, on deepening UK-@WHOAFRO cooperation against antimicrobial resistance.
We discussed the urgency of expanding surveillance, improving access to essential medicines, and advancing the Independent Panel for Evidence on Action.
We are united in our commitment as we look toward the 5th Ministerial Conference on #AMR in Abuja 🇳🇬 this June. Action today is essential to safeguard lives from this growing global threat.
Cabo Verde🇨🇻, Mauritius🇲🇺 and Seychelles🇸🇨 have made history as the first countries in sub-Saharan Africa to be certified as having eliminated measles and rubella, two vaccine-preventable diseases.
This historic achievement is the result of strong national leadership and decades of sustained commitment and investment in vaccination to ensure that no child is left unprotected.
I warmly congratulate the governments, communities, health workers and partners who made it possible.
A proud moment for public health in Africa.

As you approach your future, there will be ample opportunity to become jaded and cynical, but I urge you to resist cynicism - the world is still a beautiful place and change is possible.
Honoured to be the new Chair of the Ethics and Governance Committee of the Global Fund, one of the largest public health financing instruments in the world @GlobalFund#savinglives#HIV#TB#malaria
Working from home? How did u join your last zoom call? As Minister, I started my last call feeding my 10 month old, then carried her on my back for the rest of the call. The presentations helped her sleep. I invite you to share with the world how you worked from home as a leader.
